Remote Install Mac OS X

    Hi,

I've an old iBook G4 sitting at home that I would like to install Leopard on.

The only problem is that the CD drive in it is busted.
I know that in Leopard there is a remote install application but it says it is only for use on MacBook Air's.

Is there any way to install Leopard on the iBook from my MacBook Pro?

Probably the easiest way is to use an external DVD drive. Alternatively, if you can get your hands on a Firewire hard drive, you can install Leopard to that by having it plugged into the MacBook Pro and booting from the DVD. Then connect the drive to the iBook, boot from it and then use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the contents of the external drive to the iBook's drive.

Nope, but you'll need to make sure that before you clone to the external drive you set its partition map to 'Apple Partition Map' in Disk Utility. This will enable you to boot it from a PowerPC Mac (but not an Intel Mac). That's fine, because you'll only need to boot from it once using the iBook. Note that it has to be Firewire though, only Intel Macs can boot from USB.

Last year, I gave my PB a dose of Tiger; it also has an inactive DVD drive. I used my MB to run it via Firewire and it worked grand, give or take a few trys (I find Target Disc mode a finicky bugger to set up and a doddle to use). Once they matched it, it was a case of click drag and all done :)

Hmm, interesting, I always thought target disc was a no go between PPC and Intel.

Man, I did have some problems initially doing it (There is a few known conflicts) but in the end I went from having everything on a G5 to having it all on a Macintel and booting up the G4 from the MB. I'll do a file move the next day or two to back up files but it should be fine.

As others have said you wont be able to install to a PPC machine from the install disk running in your Macbook pro. But what should work is booting normally from your iBook and then turn on your Macbook pro in Target mode. Connect to your iBook via firewire and put the leopard disk in the Macbook Pro. The disk should then appear on your iBook desktop and then you can restart the iBook and it should startup from the disk drive in the Macbook pro as if it were just an external CD/DVD drive.
