early electronica

I was mad into electronic music from an early age, thats what got me into dance music into the first place, though sometimes I think the early pioneers seem to be forgotten, which is a pity, a lot of these came out of the post-punk era, when the idea of using samples ( all tape based, samplers were way to expensive) and synths to create interesting stuff on their own independant labels
even before that you had people like tangerine dream, klaus schulze and walter carlos using moog and home brew keyboards to make electronica, though this was more from the 60's acid music end of things
Just curious if anyone else like this!
here are a few of them

DAF (still going http://www.daf.org ) pure germanic music, producing mad techno before the genre existed
Tangerine Dream-ambient pioneers who started in the late 60's
The Normal, who was Daniel Miller, founder of mute records
    Cabaret Voltaire-sheffield pioneers
    Fad Gadget
    Throbbing Gristle-sick sick sick music
    Silicon Teens
Walter Carlos-switched on Back-early moog versions of Bach
    Einstürzende Neubauten
    yallow magic orchestra
silver apples-download the track program, a drummer, oscillators and a radio!
and not forgetting krautrockers Can, Faust and Neu!

Love krautrock and especially Can, Ege Bamyasi probably my favourite followed closely by Future Days. Definitely Klaus Schulze too from what I have heard but also need to check out more from him - they have a good selection in Tower actually and keep meaning to buy more. The only one I have heard is 'X' - any suggestions as to where next? I do have actually some of his more recent work with Pete Namlook on the Fax label etc which are excellent too - heavy on the moog also as expected, The Dark Side of the Moog series had some amazing moments.

On the Can front also the album with Holger Czukay and David Sylvian is spectacular -

Have some Cabaret Voltaire also and Tangerine Dream but must check out more of what you have listed.

Another recent one I have listened to also are Harmonia, excellent stuff from them too. God bless the Germans and the music they have produced over the years! :)

    And actually Cabaret Voltaire went on to do some amazing stuff in terms of ambient on the Apollo label - love this album;

Apollo really was a fantastic label.

Ahh good man! Try schulze's body love, very tangerine dream, but more porno soundtrack, if you know what i mean <cough cough>
The early TD stuff is great-Ricochet, a live album is amazing considering the difficulty in playing live analog synths are, also phaedra (originally released on virgin as was a lot of that stuff was) is great.
I agree about german electronica, miles ahead of it's time, though there was a certain element that went too far, like Eloy and Amon Duul II, but that is warped acid music!
Forgot Holger Czukay really good as well, also Yello, even though they are swiss
check out the post punk stuff especially DAF, you'll be surprised-they have a track called Der Mussolini-banging techno from years ago, though if you are on a P2P looking for it there are loads of ****e mixes doing the rounds
the Cabs are great, even if most people just know Sensoria, proto-electro sounds, but very funky
Finally try the Normal's TVOD and warm letherette (mad grace jones did a cover of it!)

Cool cheers for that, will defo check out more and be interested to hear the likes of DAF - are they like the whole EBM thing with the likes of Nitzer Ebb say? - amazing how some of their tunes are so like german techno that came a few years later, even well after acid etc.

Think I saw that Schulze one in Tower and going into town today so will pick that up. :pac:

Personally, I'm loving Brian Eno right now.

Brian Eno is amazing alright - I reckon 'An Ending' from Apollo has to be one of the best ambient pieces of music ever made, puts shivers through me every time I play it.

I picked up Phaedra by Tangerine Dream and Timewind by Schulze over the weekend, both amazing albums from first listens.

You could probably add some Beatles stuff to that list as well.

Strawberry Fields Forever being one example.
