It's really annoying that the Leopard release of preview won't allow content editing of pdf files anymore grrrrr! Anyone got any free/open source alternatives that will allow me to edit a pdf file?

    I thought you had CS3 ? Doesn't it come with Acrobat ?

What about taking the Preview App from a Tiger machine ? Would that work I wonder ?

Free alternatives seem scarce enough. A few hits for X11 users though. Tex and Lyx seem popular and Inkscape is another.

Ended up editing it in Illustrator last night alright. Had just hoped there was something a little tidier, akin to how Preview used to handle it. Appears not. :(

OpenOffice version 3 is meant to have this feature. Waiting in anticipation.

This is a good time to tell people ( that might not know) how to edit pdf files.

    Open any PDF
    click tools
    choose Annotate
pick whichever link you like from 4 options --- add a note, add an oval and so on ...

    I like it.

Hmm, I'm still himming and hawing about upgrading to Leopard, just wondering what exactly the issue is here? From what I've read, Preview in Leopard is better for editing PDFs. Do you mean that when you annotate it, those changes aren't visible when it's opened with Acrobat or something other than Preview?

Not only can you do what i said above , you can add links to web sites and all mac and windows PDF readers of Adobe Acrobat reader can view it.

The only downside, as said in the first message, is, that, you cannot replace or add text. You must use a note for this.

Could you ever do this? News to me. I dumped Preview for Skim a long time ago because I wanted non-destructive editing, so I'm not too au fait with it anymore.

Another handy thing about PDF's some might not know.

Say for example you wanted to mail a PDF to friend, and lets say it is this page. A good reason. http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/irl.woa/91024045/wo/dY7lTUIEIT3g3xjWc9XfcpkdAmw/2.?p=0

Now click file in the menu bar, click print.
when the print box opens up you will see a PDF option, click it.
now you can highlight areas on that page with red ovals or notes like i said above and send it off to a friend by email and not only will they see that web page but they will see your notes and red marks.
