I am sure there is something simple i am missing here, anyway here is my problem

my imac ( november 06) has lost the ability to pick up the back up files on time capsule, it just keeps saying it is preparing for back up and that little icon in the menu bar is spinning and spinning. i cannot enter time machine. When i open time machine in system pref. it reads it , but it does not show the oldest or next back up time and date.

My macbook ( march 07) has no problems backing up or using time machine.

My imac can read the time capsule. the time capsule is perfect.

I tried everything, network utility, airport utility --- but all this confirmed was that the time capsule is running fine --- and i tried one or two more things,( i kind of forget what i did or / was trying to do, just guessing)

How do i make my imac see the back up volume ?

There are a few stories about this in MacFormat this month, I think showing that Leopard isn't playing well with Time Machine. I'll check it out when I get home.

ok so. i started up in safe mode --- no joy.

I can't seem to repair disk permissions cause it will not give me that option.

So for now i have just turned it off. I reckon if people are having trouble with it Apple will have an update soon. so i will wait for that.

Funny thing is my macbook has no problems unlike my imac from day one. In fact from day one my macbook did the first back up at a far quicker speed. The macbook does backups at a great speed, the imac at a sluggish speed. My printer is plugged into my TC, so the imac and macbook share it. Sometimes ( not to often, 1 in 10 times) my imac will not print, so i have to unplug it from TC and plug it into the imac to print what TC refused to print. The macbook gives no trouble and i would be at a great distance away from the TC, ( imac is 3 feet away from TC)

Since my problems with backing up after the last update i have no time to really really investigate or fix the problem. But yesterday i found myself at a loose end and seen as i had nothing to do i looked into the back up problem.
Guess what i half fixed it. My Macbook to backing up no problem to my TC, operating at 110%. My imac will not back up to TC. I reckon the next update will fix this problem. I hope.

Hmm. I was thinking of getting a Time Capsule, but a Mac guru friend told me she didn't trust Time Machine, so I was dithering.

I'll dither no more. No thanks!

I have a Drobo and my housemate has Time Capsule. We have 5 macs on our network and 4/5 times they all backup fine, every now and then her iMac (white chin intel) or my Macbook plain refuses to recognise TC and its backups. I've given up on TM now, it was just annoying to have to depend on it when it wasn't 100% reliable. Backing up/reading from the Drobo has been faultless since day one, and it gets some serious use every day. The software is quite intuitive aswell.

I had problems with time machine on a macpro. I dumped it and use superduper. TM was hanging for ages and was too inconsistent. It's a great idea and will work, i'm sure, with a few updates. Imho, it's too flaky atm.
