Myself and my friend are planning to go to Japan this August for about 12 days. The plan is to leave from Shannon or Dublin (Shannon would be handier) and fly to Tokyo and then to spend time in Tokyo before maybe travelling east and eventually ending up in Kyoto. But would it make sense to fly from Kyoto back? How would I organise this- is that 2 single tickets then or can it be arranged with the airline? Also, anyono know of how to get cheaper return flights to Tokyo? 950 euro seems to be the cheapest I can find.

If you are going for 12 days you'll probably want to get a railpass, which could cover your return back to Tokyo, its only 4ish hours, if I remember correctly so not sure if hassle/expense of flying back from Kyoto would be worth it, depends on deal you can get I suppose.

950 seems expensive for flights alright, we paid about 700 last year and that wasn't cheapest option but booked it because times suited better etc. Could you travel midweek to decrease price?

As far as i remember< August is the most expencive time to travel to and from Japan.....maybe find out when the public holidays are in August and try and work around them.
Try ANA and JAL for fares.
If you fly with either ANA or JAL to Japan your domestic flights will be much cheaper with either company.
