Working A Second Job?

    Hi,

I'm considering taking up a second job. For one reason because paying a mortgage and living expenses doesn't leave much money for fun and I'd rather have less time on my hands with more money to enjoy myself than vice versa.

I'm 25, I work in finance in an office from 9 - 5 and ideally I'd like something in evenings or at weekends. I looked into the Garda Reserve which would have been cool, but don't pay so that's a no go for now (maybe some time though) and I'm just wondering does anybody have a second job or evening job and how do you find it? Is it tough working 2 jobs?

Also, what jobs are there other than maybe work in a cafe or something, does anybody know of some handy flexible second jobs and what is the pay like?

    Thanks for your help.

I worked in a cinema when I was in college and it was pretty good fun.

Just bear in mind that you won't be entitled to any tax credits on a second income and will have to pay the applicable rate on the total income.

I had been thinking recently that it would be good to change my works hours with flexitime to 8-4 and then work in domino's pizza for the dinner time rush delivering pizza. I hear the money is good especially with tips and they're keen to take on extra drivers to cater for the 5-7 rush.

Also a resonable portion of your income would be from tips which are tax free!

AFAIK tips are supposed to be declared for tax (but I don't think anyone does it).

    Not necessarily true. :)

I have a regular 9-5 job, plus I lecture in the evenings. I had the option to divide my tax credits between both employments, if I wanted to.

However, it made sense for me to dedicate all to my main employment, since I am paid so much. If only.

Would you consider working as a waiter? I know a few (full-time) waiters, and they all make over 1k into their hand per week. (I know, WTF.)

The likes of Wagamama, Market Bar, Captain Americas are your best bet.

That is correct I could split my credits between employers. You could work in a bar part-time. Most bar's would have part time staff on there books, I found it to be a great way of saving while going out. It depends on where you work though. you could also do part-time work in Bar/Night-Club security it is good money and not as bad as some people may think!

OP, because of the possible tax situation, something with tax-free tips would be an excellent idea. And you're not gonna get anything with absolutely brilliant money so why not go for something that brings in a few extra, tax-free bobs on the side?

Waiter/delivery driver (great idea) - go for those. So many people I know who wait tables say the money is great (thanks to the tips) and so is the social life.

As for what it's like to work two jobs: well I took a second job two months before going back to college full-time (fear of being broke and also to have a part-time job in the bag once I became a student again). I was a back office administrator in a bank and my second job was typist work with a newspaper two or three evenings a week (including every Sunday). The only drawback was the fact that the newspaper job started at 5 so I had to leg it straight from the bank to the paper without any break. That's not the best so I'd recommend you find something that starts at 7 or 8. Also, this was during the summer so I missed out on those lazy evenings having an outdoor pint after work. Plus, my typing job was pretty cushy and I was always out the door by 10.30. If you go for waiter work you might be under a bit more pressure and might not finish until later. But once it's only three week nights max and whatever suits at the weekend, you should be able to manage it.
It's particularly good in the winter though, as it's dark and boring anyway so you might as well be making a bit of money. The summer - maybe not so good, but it's not as if you're gonna be having a jam-packed evening every day of the week.

    Good luck with it.

  • I'm thinking about the 2nd job as well now I have regular hours, would really help to save towards a trip. What would be the best way of finding those waiter/waitress jobs? Just walking in and asking or is there a good website to use? I only have a bit of experience and it was in the States. I'd love to work evenings in a little cafe or something.
