Best Mens Shaving Razors

I was just wondering if somebody might be able to tell me what their favourite mens razor is i.e. which one gives them the closest shave. I absolutely hate stubble and I always love to be clean shaven. As a result I am always trying to get as close a shave as possible when I do shave. Anyway, two weeks ago I eventually gave into months of marketing campaigns from Gilette and I bought the new Fusion. To be honest I don't think it's all it's cracked up to be. Yes I find it quicker but it doesn't give a much closer shave. Maybe I need the battery powered version....yeah right!!! If anybody has any views on the best razors on the market I'd apprecaite a response. Also, If you have any shaving tips on getting the closest shave possible.

have you tried the shaving oils? With the gillette fusion and that little 5th blade, you get a closer than close shave.

I use the fusion and find it excellent. I use Yon Ka barber shaving cream too. I think its expensive though because it is excellent, but I cant be sure because I got it for Crimbo. But it gives a brilliant and comfortable shave, and leaves you without that horrible razor burn

Definitely use shaving oil rather than gel/foam. Miles better. That "ultimate shaving solution" stuff is in shops now, used to only be able to get it online. Last for aaaages too!

Personally I use aldi's 3 blade yokes, of course they're not quite as good as gilette's equivalent but I'd say you could use one razor per shave and it'd still work out about the same cost as gilette..no need for that though, ya can easily get 3 or 4 out of each one.

Found Fusion to be absolute rubbish, went back to a Mach 3 and it is far better I find. I use oil as well, rather than the foam.

i found the fusion ok,but its hard to top the mach 3.

Yeah the mach 3's the business.

Trick is to shave with foam get most of it off. Go with the grain first time, then use oil and go against the grain real carefully. You get the best shave ever.

To stop spots (cause some people get them after shaving against the grain) use aftershave straight after rinsing and about half an hour after, slap on a load of aftershave balm.

    Works for me ever time!

Personally I cannot stand any Gilette products. For years I shelled out a fortune on blades that seemed to go blunt very quickly. Gilette seems to justify the crazy price of their razors by slapping more blades on, making it vibrate or packaging it in radioactive green. Here's an idea, how about just making the damn blades better to begin with?

Anyway, I have a point to this post, honest :). I use these blades. They are pretty cheap and last far longer than Gilette. Combine them with a good shaving soap and a decent razor and you'll be all set!

I agree with that one, since I get a rough beard, Gillette razors don't get me more than two shaves per blade. So do the math on how much that costs me :/

Get yourself a Good Merkur Futur Razor (german), some good shaving cream (Proraso Italian cream) and some Feather razor blades (japanese)

    ;)

I don't work for this company in any way, it's where i get my blades - slick deals and delivery is dirt cheap :)

Funnily enough that business isn't actually based in Connaught at all as you might think. It's an English company :).

To avoid having to convert Sterling to Euro, have a look at Irish businesses such as 4Men.ie. I have been using them for a few years and they haven't let me down.

Try using a brush and shaving cream/soap to massage the bristles and raise them up.I use the mach 3t but i've read several times that single blade razors get the closest shave. Also shaving after a shower should mean thd bristles are softened.

I find there is not much of a muchness between any of mach 3 or fusion blades bar the price!!

Any mach 3 is grand. The shaving oils are pretty good tho.

I tried the 'King of shaves' shaving oil (got some in Tesco), applied some before I lathered up with some shaving cream, can't say I noticed too much of a difference if any at all. Nothing seems to soften my beard

Have the shaving oils improved? I used an oil that came in a very small container, Irish company made it but forget the name. It's been 10 years since I last used it and back then the blades were hard to clean because of the oil and I found myself going through more blades as a result.

At the moment I used the Clinique Aloe-Vera gel, works great for me and the best part is that it's fragrance free!

I use the exact same setup, got a Merkur razor about 2 years ago and with the Feather blades and a quality cream it gives a way better shave than any of the multiblades (Fusion, etc.). The 'safety' razor takes a bit of adjustment at first but it is well worth it, gives a much closer shave and leaves the skin in much better shape too.

+1 on connaughtshaving.com, I only came across these in the last few months but am very impressed with their quality, service and prices.

I wrote to gilette recently complaining about how the Mach 3 razors used to give me a bout 10 shaves but now only give me about 3 before becoming blunt. They sent me a few freebies to keep me quiet but I stopped buying them shortly after.

Can anyone give me a rundown of what I need to order i.e.
    1 Merkur Set + Blades

so I can give them a shot. Is this a cutthroat razor?

wtf? you don't need to use some shaving cream after putting on the oil.

No they mean a single blade, see here I'd love to be able to use a cut throat though, they are soo cool!!!!

i'm currently on an electric razor, as paying for blades was ridiculously expensive. i dislike the lack of a very close shave. but it leaves it fairly close. takes time to get used to though

But a bugger to use - try shaving under your nose. I have one, and it needs a lt of love and attention. A Merkur Progress is a better bet.

A Merkur safety razor - the Progress is good as it's adjustable. Get a blade sampler from Connaught and see which ones you like. Then you need a brush and some creams. Irishbarber.com or Connaught can supply what you need.

Interesting because I did something quite similar. Having bought an 8 pack of Mach3 Turbo in Dunnes a year ago or so for a good price. I noticed that all the designs on the back of the blades were different, as in made from factories/machiness or at different times etc...

And on top of that, the spring mechanism didn't bounce back when pressure was applied. I wrote a letter and sent samples (after only one shave 4-5 went faulty, some were brand new) - they sent a cheque covering the 15 euro I spent.

From then on, I refused to buy into their expensive gimmicks. They do give a close shave, but what are they? 3.50-4.50 a blade? I get Feather ones for 30 cents now.

They somehow use lesser quality blades on their old products and try to encourage people to buy the latest, and another thing - the Fusion aloe vera strip does not last anywhere near as long as it used to on the Turbo ones.

    Good riddance to Gillette.

    ___

There are Double Edge blades 'DE' for short and also cut-throat (Whereby you use a strop to sharpen the blade) I don't use one personally myself, well not yet.

A good start for DE shaving is the Merkur Futur (try 4men.ie - it's not cheap but it's a once off) they'll send you some Merkur blades with that too. I recommend the Proraso cream as well. Search Youtube for shaving vids, there's 100's out there for tips and techniques.

    Good Luck

I've never been able to manage any Gillette product with more than 2 blades. I get a good run out of the old 2 blade "sensors" (when using oil), but anything more is a trainwreck.

    Tesco Value razors ftw

at €0.45 for a pack of 10 u cant go wrong

and the lack of a vitamin strip makes them last much longer as a disposable

Mach 3 are a loada me fanny, too flexible, dont shave that close, and at €18 for a pack of replacement heads they can kiss me arse!

For buying Gilette blades Id recommend checking eBay, i got 16 for €22 including delivery, i think they were €24 for a pack of 8 in Dunnes last i checked. Thats for Mach 3 Power btw.

Im using Gilette Fusion shaving gel at the moment and I am very impressed with it. Although, with the links to those shaving websites you guys have provided i might try some proper soap or something.

I did try that King of Shaves oil once a good while back, found it useless to be honest. But i might have been using it wrong!

I tried eBaya few times before I move to a safety razor. The problem with Gillette blades from eBay is that that are in my experience seconds, blunt rejects or destined for some other part of the world e.g. Pakistan or India and are just not sharp. YMMV.

from any objective point of view the fusion are the best.

always have the shave after the shower, so much easier and blade will last forever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭mickd

I use Gillette Fusion power for shaving as i find it the best blade for my dense undergrowth. Any smaller blade and shaving is quite uncomfortable. I accept that its damn expensive and the strip is gone after two shaves if one is lucky. Crucial to this is the type of shaving oil/gel. By far the best to use is the king of shaves alpha shaving gel. Its in a black and orange package, same colour as fusion. The other king of shaves I have tried are useless, this is the one that works for me, i.e the closest shave and no redness on the neck. Unfortunately it has been out of stock in boots, (the only one who sell it)for the last three months so i have been reduced to finding a susbstitute. So far the only one that reasonable is Gillette Fusion gel for tough beard which is in all shops.
