OK, I have a friend who needs to up the RAM in his system so I recommended he run the Crucial scanner in order to find out what he needed.

I don't have access to this machine myself & from what I can gather it's a "No Name" PC built by someone else about 4 years ago.

The SiS-661 model Mobo is available in bot 478 & 775 from what I can gather but I'm not sure of that.

The scanner told him it could not make an exact match but did give the following details. Can the RAM type be identified from this Info?

Our System Scanner couldn't make a complete match, but we can still help you find the right memory upgrade.
The following is a list of what our scan was able to detect:
    System Manufacturer: AWARD_
    System Model: AWRDACPI
    Motherboard Manufacturer: N.A.
    Motherboard Model: SiS-661

    Maximum Memory Capacity: 4194304 MB
    Currently Installed Memory: 512 MB
    Available Memory Slots: 3
    Number of Banks: 4
    Dual Channel Support: N.A.
    CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    CPU Family: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.93GHz Model 4, Stepping 1
    CPU Speed: 2933 MHz

    Check it in the BIOS?

    Nope!

I got him to boot into the BIOS but all it displays is the amount of RAM?

He looked through every option available there but he can see no mention of the Memory type?

Open it up and read the label on the modules. Might not be practical, but it would be quick! ;)

Well irlrobins, I even thought of that myself ;-) lol but it's as if we were destined to never know!!!! There are no labels or markings of any significance whatsoever on the 512 module installed.

google and download a program called hwinfo32

its a prog that may reveal the information that you need, just click the dropdown + sign beside the memory tab and see how you go from there,

    best of luck.

Cheers Dave, I have sent that Info to him & will report back with his findings.

I tried it on my own Rig just to see & give me everything, nice ;-)

Well it's probably DDR RAM if it's three years old, the number of notches in the bottom will tell you for sure. DDR will fall back to the default speed, so it doesn't really matter what speed he puts in, it will drop to match the mobo.

RAM is cheap, so even if he has to ditch the 512, he'll get a gig or two for very little anyway.

Well Dave, that done the trick just fine, cheers, It's a handy little App to have. The machine has PC3200 DDR SDRAM.

How right you were rrpc, it was DDR.

The machine has three spare slots & he wants to get 2GB & I just need to confirm that this will do the job? It's just that it does not mention the SDRAM bit but I think it will do if he buys 2 of these?

Thanks to all for your input & assistance. :)

yeah, just get two of those and dump the 512. Between the extra RAM and the fact that it should be running in Dual Channel mode (assuming that architecture supports it) should make the PC a lot faster and more versatile.
