Couldn't think of a better place to ask....

I've got me a crate of beer that I am NOT letting go to waste

The best before printed on the bottom of the can is the 20th April 2008. Will this be OK to drink 14 days after this? Either way i'm going to drink it :D

It will be fine! Enjoy and pass a few this way!

Edit: best before is not the same a use by! It is a recommendation not a health warning so there is a bit of leeway with the date as far as I know!

What are you talking about 14 days for? You should have drunk it already, drink it now, quick!

Won't get a chance to drink it this weekend - i'm doing powerboat demonstrations :o

However, the weekend after that will see the crate disappear :D

I drank beer that was 6 months out of date before. Not a bother at all.

Its fine. I work in an offo an we often get beer that is past its best before date at a discount when we cant sell to customers anymore...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 816 ✭✭✭dr strangelove

I know Devney's in Rathmines has a fridge full of out of date booze, that you can pick up cheap.

I've had beer more than a year out of date with no consequences other than a desire to surf naked and a headache the next day, but then that always happens whether the beer is out of date or not!

The key word in the title is beer. Unless there's a nasty health warning that says Budweiser or Light on it, then it's to be drank.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

    +1 dfx-

We used get all the out of date beers in work (used to be a hotel barman) and the best part was they were usually the foreign/import/good beers!!! All the diageo *spits crap would sell like hot cakes and we'd always have Okocim, Tiger, Tsing Tsao, etc. left over. Happy days!

Dont do it OP beer is bad out of date beer is very bad you may suffer sudden death from trying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭oblivious

Generally it should be fine, supposably no know human pathogens can survive in beer due to the low ph and those that contain hops.

wheats beers are generally are better consumed fresh, oxidation and light striking (green or clear glass) are much more detrimental to the beer

Alcohol has been used to preserve stuff for years. How unsafe can alcohol preserved in alcohol be?

Just checking that its was not a sour style of beer?

    they do exist
    they must have been capped.

Capped beer will last years, decades even if the capping process is sound ,similar with can

    Jeez..

Out of date beer is only snobbery talk.

Beer is like a fine woman

The older the get, the more bitter they become.. but still does essentially the same thing.

i mean capped as in cap removed, much like a tapped keg

I got some guinness draught cans that were 2 weeks out of date. They were absolutely rank. They were promptly tipped down the sink.

Its only a best before date. In my opinion the only best before label that should be a on a beer is as follows:

    "best before another beer"

Some years ago in my student days, i have a few bottles of beer donated to me by non drinking parents of a friend. They gave me a few bottles of guiness and smithwicks that were 6-7 years out of date! No joke!

2 friends drank 2 bottles each. one of the friends was fine (he was a beer monster) The other friend was violently ill and urinated all over the floor in his sleep.

    What a hero!

He was able to get the wee to the floor in his sleep, and not wet the bed?

    Professional tbh.

Forgot to mention he was sleeping on the floor at the time. at least he managed to fall asleep in the bedroom!!

For the record, when he woke up, he demanded to know who came in while he was asleep and pee'd on him. Eventually the penny dropped when he realised the pee was under him and not on him.

Actually, out of date bud is quite drinkable. Wouldn't touch the muck normally, but it gets gassier and overly malty. Really, really nice!

After drinking 6-year-out-of-date beer, i'm impressed he even managed to find the floor :\

hmm, was wondering this myself recently. I was back in Ireland for a week and rummaging around in a cupboard in my parents house when I found 3 cans of Guinness which were out of date since April.

I had to make a very quick decision there and then:
    • I could put them in the fridge, wait for them to cool and chance drinking OR
    • I could pop into town to the local offie and pick up a ready chilled fridge pack.
Recalling some of my honours leaving cert maths and using one of the complicated theorems that I still remember I decided I would be better to go to the offie as 8 cans are better than 3!

    QED

I recently found a crate of large Guinness bottles out in a bush at the back of my parents house, (my dad is an ex Guinness employee) the best before date was 1995. I drank one and it was THE nicest thing I've drank in years.. all the labels were off and the caps were all fairly rusted, and the best before date on the cap was 95..
