Just wondering if anyone has or is about to use a Schiedel chimney system? I've heard that they are earier to install and because they are insulated, the flue is kept cooler thus making it easier to clean? I'm in no way connected to the company, just looking to see if anyone has used them and exactly how easy are they to install?

Saw it at the RDS in Nov . Liked the look of it . Just about to use it for 2 fireplaces . Specing fire chest , gather with damper , and stack i.e "the open fire" system .

Let you know in the New Year how it went ( works not started yet )

basic concept is concrete units with flue liner and insulation included . eliminates doubt about on site fill between blockwork and liner .

many sytems are available including one which integrates a supply air channel to the actual fire - a bit like a huge balanced flue if you like

if you google "scheidel northern ireland" - good website

I used these systems a lot on a housing development i was running. you get a flyer in the pack with the system with a full set of instructions. if you are installing yourself read all of this first to make sure that you dont use a piece in the wrong place!! i would also read this if i was getting a mason to do the work, some will throw the pieces where they think they will fit only to find that they needed it later! make sure the solid pieces are used around the opening/fireplace itself and that the pots are well sealed with the fire retarder.

one draw back with this system is that if you have it protruding more than 1m out of the roof, the stack seems vey unstable, being able to sway with one hand! If going high i would strap this in place or talk to schiedel about any concerns you have over this. they have great Cust. supp.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Barney,

Just wondering did you end up installing this system? Have been looking at this system for a few weeks now, any advice you have would be great.

    Thanks

    I looked at them also.

I ended up going with a poujoulet chimney system. Twin walled flue with false chimney on top. I regret it to be honest . Cost a fortune. If you are doing a new build just to a normal chimney IMO.

I used it and one think to watch out for is the system with the air intake CANNOT be moved once it's started as they don't make a bend section.

Any clue on what the cost per meter is.

    Thanks Hexosan.

How do u find it apart from that issue. I'm installing in a new build as the builder will not build me a standard chimney system. Was hoping it would b an easy solution.

    What company did u use?

I'm not looking for a recommendation, it was just a question as to which company he used.

I understand, but you'll appreciate that we have a forum charter that dictates company names will be offered by PM only - refer to http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055036302

But What's the problem with the builder?

He wont have anything to do with installing the chimney as I am buying of plans and he has been told that he cannot do anything extra to the house. He has informed me I must get the chimney done myself. So I am just looking for the easiest way forward as the construction company will not do anything extra even if I pay extra for it. So just looking for some advice on this chimney system

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭fclauson

I looked at this chimney system and following advice from SAS on this forum did not go with it. He had no end of issues with the "clam shell" closing system

why are you thinking of using this system ?

    Hi fclauson

sorry to drag up an old thread but coudl you elaborate on what the problems with the schiedel chimney system was.

What chimney did you go with in the end and would you recommend it?

    Thanks in advance
