Multiscreen with MBP and external monitor

Brand new Leopard MBP. 24" Dell screen.

I can get multi and mirrored displays working but I cannot get the dock to appear on the external monitor unless I put it on the right hand side. Cant get it to appear on the bottom unless I turn off mirroring and then I cant get it running at true 1920x1200 which I can with multi-display or whatever its called. Neither can I get the menu bar appearing on the external display.

You can do this in Windows XP using the same similar feature on windows - you decide which is the primary display and the Start bar and all the main windows UI appears on that screen and the other screen just becomes the secondary window you can drag apps onto.

Anyone else found this problem, and found a way around it ?

    Really annoying

I can't see where this problem is coming from. I'm running a MacBook with an external monitors at either 1680x1050 or 1900x1200 depending on where I am. I have my menu/dock dragged attached to the external display by default so whenever I plug a monitor in it just works. I've never had any issues with it. I know plenty of people with a similar setup on MacBook Pro's with no issues too.

In the layout diagram in the Displays Preferences screen, one of the monitors will display a little menu bar at the top. Just drag the menu bar from one screen to the other. Seems obvious now but I had to do loads of googling to figure that one out!
