Amory Lovins – the guy who lives in probably what is the first zero energy house ever built, has produced a short flash video (in 6 segments) on how cars can be made substantially more energy efficient. He covers carbon fibre bodies (light weight), aerodynamics improvements, rolling resistance of the tyres, improved energy efficiency in electrical and alternative propulsion systems, etc.

His conclusion is that the real limiting factor is not energy consumption or pollution – it is road space. In other words there is no getting away from the need to build a public transport infrastructure that is desirable to use and meets people’s door to door transportation needs.
