In the last episode, the ties that bind, when the cylon ships jump just before the cylon battle between the 6's and the 1's (cavil) we finally see not just the random pattern of stars but a famaliar set of constellations, Orion and Tarus.

These are seen pretty much as they are from earth meaning that they cant be too far from earth now!!! It is true that galactic distances are huge and they would only have to be in line of site to see the same pattern of stars, but a qualified astronomer aquaintance has worked out, using paralax of two stars in the constellations that are relitavely close to earth, that they are roughly 400Astronomical units from earth. Note, the distance from the earth to the sun is 1 Astronomical unit. Well done to albertw for working this out.

400 Astronomical units cant be too far for any ship with an FTL drive, as in the grand scheme of the galaxy, 400AU is absolutely nothing! 1 light year is 63240AU, and these ships are capiable of travelling faster than light for large distances therefore they should be aware of a ( to coin a phrase) "M Class planet" in a nearby solar system resembling that described in their scripture!!!!

Ah, I'd say real astronomy buffs would just "see" it.

Just wondering has Earth really been found yet? At the end of season 3 (Crossroads part 2), we zoom away from the fleet surrounded by Cylon Basestars to a planet clearly identifiable as Earth. You can easily see the North American continent, especially Florida.

However the planet found now, shows no evidence it's Earth. Any shot from space shows no identifiable landmasses of any sort. Earth or not?

In the latest episode when boomer comes out of the first ftl jump the raptor is shown beside a large gas giant very like jupiter,we even see one of it's moons.Could be our system.

Yes but it is fair to say that there is probably more than one gas giant planet in the milky way galaxy.

I also thought that this was Jupiter, the colours of the cloud belts were an exact match (not all gas giants look alike - we've got 4 in our solar system and they all look quite different).

Was this a temporary stop-over for Boomer (ie. did she jump again), or was the colony near this gas giant planet?

From what i gathered it was the former site of the Cylon Colony. Adama had a Raptor follow Boomer there but then they lost track of her.

The implication was that Cavil had moved the Colony elsewhere?

Her flashbacks where of her in her Viper in the orbit of Earth, not physically on it. Since they found the Viper crashed with her in it, she probably died on entry.
