Possible RAM issue? How many RAM boards are there?

What version of OS X are you using?

I'll second the RAM fault possibility. Try re-seating the RAM sticks.

I'll agree with WUSBDesign that you should try reseating the RAM boards. If that doesn't work, try removing one and restarting the computer. If you experience the same issue again, remove the next board, putting the one you took out back in its place. Continue until you do not experience the freezing again.

Also, if you got the original CDs, run the Apple Hardware Test.

You can check the OS version by clicking into the Apple logo on the top left corner of the screen and selecting About this Mac.

When the mouse stops working next time try pressing the Apple key (next to the Space Bar ) and the N key together.
This should open a new Finder Window.
Just to check that it's not simply a faulty mouse ?!

    Let's know if this works.

Is everything frozen? I mean it's not just that the mouse is broken is it?

But as others have said if the whole machine is totally locking up then it's a good chance it's a RAM problem. I've had some experience with this since anytime I install new RAM I never seem to seat it properly.

The next likely candidate would be the HDD - I am only saying this because I managed to fix a iMac from symptoms likes yours, plus plenty of beach-balling.

The alternative to this HDD swapping would be to boot off from a external HDD via Firewire.

Meanwhile, have a go at resetting the PRAM (holding Cmd-Opt-P-R on boot up until your hear BOING twice), but no promises.

If Apple & N works then surely the computer isn't frozen ?!
Have you tried another mouse ? Or a different USB port (there are 2 ports on the keyboard) . If the Mouse is connected to the Keyboard and it (the keyboard) works ok then you would have to suspect the mouse.
Can you cycle through apps with Apple & TAB ?
Try Apple & F and try search for something. If this is quick the the drive is likely ok.

If it's just the mouse then I have a few spare Apple mice here so I could spare you one.

Zener, your a prophet in your own land!!

    ITS THE MOUSE!!

Any USB mouse will fix your problem
Apple + E will eject your CD (If it was working, holding down the mouse button down on boot up would also eject)
