Diagnostics won't really tell you anything, their only an aid to diagnose a problem. For example, if you noticed there was a lack of power or you were using a lot of fuel then the diagnostic would be an AID, but its never a way for checking for a fault with no symptoms.

    Ok

I've being researching and found these

When trying to get a cable to plug into a laptop there seems to be mention of VAG cables none mention toyota
Will any cable suit a toyota? the rav4 is a diesel 2004

    software seems easily available

I would prefer a laptop based solution as i would hope to be able to do more (maybe)

I had a skoda last year which was perfect bar a central locking problem, when I ran diagnostics on it showed a lock motor problem but also a lamba sensor that was failing interminently and a heated mirror issue neither of which I was aware of

You have to get the specific cable for Toyota, they are all different. (Use a different amount of pins). I will have a check for you.

The software that you can pick up online also allows you to run ECU remaps, turn off services lights etc etc. Its pretty cool when you get into it, though most of the cables need to connect to the laptop via a Serial port. Most new laptops don't have serial ports unfortunately, so its the one occasion where the older the laptop the better!. You can however get a serial port to USB convertor to allow you to connect to a newer laptop..

Most of the OBD software is donkeys years old too (DOS based) so it runs better on Windows 95, 98 and 2K.

Yeah, Vag-Com .. error codes you would have recieved would have been

    Implausable reading Lambda sensor
    and probably
    Central Convenience unit

Both can be false positives .. no point in replacing a part based on a ODB diagnostic, its only an aid to help pin down an issue. If you get an error code on your ECU, you will go to the dealer, they will check it, see the error code, clear the log and send you on your happy way.

    Hi,
I got a Lexus '01 and got this

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ELM323-Scantool-Scanner-Diagnostic-Interface-USB-OBD2_W0QQitemZ160232600178QQihZ006QQcategoryZ30921QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Downloaded free software from the internet and connected up the laptop to the car. Sure enough it had a fault. Cleared it to see if it would come back again. Plus I needed to research it. Fault came back again and each time the MIL light did not a appear. Found that intermittent fault do not show up MIL light. Found out that the fault was due to the MAF sensor or air flow flow sensor. Read up a bit more and found out how to clean and works fine ever since.
What year is the RAV4 is it diesel, cause OBD was not standard on diesel cars untill 2003. Petrol 2001. Toyota porocols are ISO9141. All car should be on the CAN porocol by this year. So don't pay too much.

Word of Warning. "if your going to REMAP an ECU expect to pay e900 for a new one if it gose wrong."

    Bike,
    Fred.

    Tree House,
    Fred.

Vag-Com is a piece of software, this is just a ODB-II reader.
That thing is nothing to do with Vag-COM what so ever

    Great advice
I have no intention of remappping the ECU.. I just want to have a look
I'll have a look at for the iso info later

To be honest i don't want to have to pay a garage to change the oil and filters

You don't need a diagnostic code reader to change the oil:rolleyes:

Anyway, Toyotas since 2001 (i think) use OBDII

I use an ELM 323 interface and scantool software on a laptop and it works fine for recent toyotas and other cars too.

Generally, unless your engine management light is on, there's not a lot of point in using a code reader.

    OVER A YEAR LATER

OK i never bought anything to read the codes

Now I need to have engine management light on.

    Its a Toyota RAV4 2004 diesel

Will this do the job? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ELM323-Interface-with-MCU_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el1177QQhashZitem190307949629QQitemZ190307949629QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools?

Whats the MCU option to buy with or without?

For people who are wondering .
This morning when I got a bigish road and put the boot down It kinda hit a wall around 3000 rpm
the turbo wasn't really kicking in sometimes it would?
later in the day the engine management light came on

    Thanks

It's not in the garages interest to not check it for you, the warranty is backed by Toyota, so even if there was a fault, it wouldn't be coming out of the garages pocket.

Scan won't exactly tell you much, and if there's no ECU light or Check 4X4 system message coming on, there is unlikely to be a problem.

Why not just bring it to a main toyota dealer and get them to check it over approx 1 hour labour, some of them gave trouble with injectors and suction control valves, and you need to look at the live data readings when the engine is running, a standard obd code reader will not give you that info.

I bought it to a garage this evening
It had 3 errors on it. 2 relating to the MAF Air intake sensor but i had it off earlier with the engine running.
It was reading 50oC while ticking over with an outside temp of 13oC which seemed high.
But I have the sensor beside me not and its resistance is within limits

Also it brought up P0627 Open or shut suction control
These are the valves on the fuel pump - I believe ?
I'm thinking of trying these valve forst any tips on where to get them for a good price?

    Thanks
