Has anyone else experienced a game which can cause so much anger and frustration !

In one Blue shell you can go from first to last in a couple of seconds... Tonight me and 2 friends played a multi-player game and the screams, shouts and swearing was crazy !

Its a pain in the hole (especially in 100cc and 150cc) ... Finish line in site, and hit with red shell, ink, blue shell and POW simultaneously. Ridiculous.

Yeah i've been playing since the SNES and i've never gotten so annoyed when somebody hits me on the line, it's a good thing though, it justs makes you want to play more.

Thing that angers me the most bout mario kart is how the ds version was completely ruined by snaking..
Online is no fun. The fun in mariokart lied in the chaos not in some silly technique which some people could be arsed to master.

It can be frustrating but it can also be great when you pip someone on the line because they got shelled. The chaos is what makes the game great, anyone can win the race (even girls)

How'd you get a Wii working back there in the stoneage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

Yeah it's annoying. At times I'd sware the game is cheating in 1 player. I've been shelled on the line and droped from first to 5th.

In multiplayer I don't mind though it's all good fun.

Bloopers ink shouldnt matter if the finish line is in sight, he doesnt slow you down?

    He didn't mention bloopers ink?

I have been first in 1Player and been way out in front when just rounding the last bend been hit with a blue shell, then just as I recover a red shell, then as I recover another red shell and then finally as I recover for the third time another red shell and I finish 5th.

The important thing is I have recovered being hit with a red shell (and others) while spinning after a smack does nothing so just as my engine is revving again bam I get hit.

No it doesn't slow you down - my point was the AI bombards you with 4 different attacks simultaneously when the finish line is in sight.

I agree its a laugh in multiplayer, but it sucks the fun out of the harder single player levels.

TBH all the Mario Kart games featured cheating AI. 150cc always causes me heartache because of the last minute blue shells and the AI that catches up constantly despite you being miles out in front. I've always preferred games without cheating AI like Wipeout and F-zero since they rely on skill and don't induce controller tantrums.

It's a pity the 3D games have all adopted the single player annoyances of the N64 game. The only MK games that didn't take the piss wit their cheating AI were the SNES and GBA game, although the AI wasn't totally fair either.

N64 Mario kart is the best though, by a mile

Much better than this new one too

On the last lap get a banana as thats all you get and hang it out your ass until you cross the line, protects from most fired items cept blue shell.

Even though all of this "cheating" happens, its still a fantastic addictive game. Havin a few drinks and playing this with a few mates is heaven :)

There should be at least a seconds grace time before they can hit you again.

The double or tripple whammy can drive me mad too, its way worse on Wii than on the DS where it never really bothered me.

Does nobody else miss the teaming up element of Double Dash?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,162 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

The snes was just as bad, the AI always were an elastic band behind you, which carried through to the GBA version (was always funny on ribbon road with the shortcut, how the AI still managed to get close). The original F-Zero had the same kind of AI.

However, in the 3D versions, the blue shell is probably the biggest problem, undefendable against, and only targetting the leader by an AI back in 7th or 8th, at least shells are defendable, and pow/ink effect the leading pack equally.

It's made worse by getting hit making you lose your items, so even if you had a green shell/banana stored, getting hit by a blue opens you up to attacks you have no chance against.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I got hit by a blue shell while in 3rd which really pissed me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

It's always fun in multiplayer, when you're last, get a blue shell, and are able to take out 2/3 at the front with it! :D Cheap shot, but fun!***

Hahaha, I love the really cruel things, like being in first, but seeing someone you're playing against fire off a blue, so you hang back a bit, let another out in front and BAM! Hahahahahahahaha... If I keep that up I'll be single by the end of the week, I swear!

it's certainly annoying when you're trying to unlock characters/vehicles.

what annoys me is the inability to customise options. i much prefer mario soccer: you can set what type of power ups, or switch them off entirely.

i'd like to be able to make the game 10 laps long with no power ups, and no bloody blue shells, or make the battle game longer. i hate spending more time in between games than playing the bloody thing.

and i'd like to go back to the old battle mode: last man standing! no respawning, and infinite time.

anyway. i don't like how few options there are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

Just bought this and tis fun :) question: how do I race as my mii? Also, does it auto save my single player game? didnt see a save option and just turned the wii off....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,745 ✭✭✭doonothing

I was wondering that too, where's the race as mii option?
I wish they included all the N64 battle courses... Remember the lava donut place?
And as said, more options! Smash bros. levels of customisation...imagine!
Oh, and I kinda miss the character-individual weapons of double dash, that was a great idea!

Win the 100cc Special Cup to unlock it.

Just a joke dont take it so seriously.
Did your sense of humour get hit by a blue shell? ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,332 ✭✭✭valleyoftheunos

Still haven't had much time with it, got totally spanked on line on Tuesday and found the bikes a bit of work to get used to on 100cc last night. the AI is a bit more vicious, the way it should be:D

Think the Nunchuk might be the way forward, will give it ago tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭Diddler82

Have to agree with what alot of being said about the Blue Shell but what I find is...you get mashed for the first two laps get knocked back at the beginning of the last lap and then get the Infinite Mushroom/Big Mushroom or Star and plough through them all in the last couple of bends...

Have unlocked the Mirror Cups...absolutely horrendous so far....played the first 4 cups...not a Gold Cup in sight...getting milled on the last lap always :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,332 ✭✭✭valleyoftheunos

Was on line last night and am so frustrated, timeand time again I would finish a race in second or third, often just pipping someone to the line, My dude would do a happy dance and the music would play telling me my position, then when the results and times come up it says I Finished in 4th or 5th WTF?????

I'm not experiencing any lag as best I can tell so what the hell is going on? Has anyone else experienced this? I noticed it most of all when I was playing "Worldwide" games and it only happened when I finished in the top three.

    Any ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Check what the times of the winners were, they may be cheating!
Lookout for times that seem pretty much impossible.

Im totally addicted! Cant stop playing this. Most frustrating moment I find is when I get inked on the Ghost track!! I just keep falling off :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

One added frustrating feature that I don't remember about previous Mario Karts is losing any power-ups you have if you get hit by one. Also, sometimes hanging a banana/shell out your backside doesn't stop another shell from hitting you. Still, sometimes you're the one shouting at the screen and sometimes you're the beneficiary of others' frustration :)

One thing that's confusing me though, how are the points totted up online? I always see people who finish below me end up with more points. As well as that, when I finish 1st I never seem to get quite as much as others do when they win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭Jip

When online and it shows you which countries people are from, does anyone else appear to be based around the Netherlands ? My Wii is set to Ireland but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
BTW, I'm a bit crap racing online but in my defence I've only played single player once, but I kick ass in battle mode !

yeah i was wondering about this too, anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

I think the points are all based around some form of handicap system, therefore someone siting on 7000 points will get less points for winning a race, than someone sitting on 5000 finishing second, if the average for all competitors is 6000..... I think!

As for anger and frustration, i save all of mine for Rainbow Road...its brought back a lot of painful memories!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,465 ✭✭✭Irish Halo

I believe how much points awarded is based on past performance and how many points you have to start with so if you have 4,000 points, usually do crap and other people in the race have 6,000 and you finish 2nd you will get a ton of points but also anyone else noticed that if you add up all the points (if someone loses points taking that as a minus number) in a race they seem to total zero?

With regards people being in The Netherlands this is because if you look they don't state a country/allow you to see what country they are in so Nintendo just puts them in "Europe". You need to go to settings and let Nintendo show your country(think it is off as default).

I'm loving this new RR! so many in the past have been truly painful but this one seems very drivable and less random, while still being quite difficult to win on!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 145 ✭✭hoppo254

Several reviews of the Game (Edge , Cnet etc) have scored the game down given the unbalanced nature of the gameplay. No longer does Mario Kart reward players who take time to perfect actual driving to the best of their ability as the gap between experts and noobs (as Kdjac put it , ill be online to play you and we will see who is a noob!) has been closed by the items (Blue Shell the main culpirit)

I enjoy this Mario Kart , battle mode aside as the tension has been removed with the computer players involved, (i remember the days of 4 player split screen with only one balloon left.....) different Mario Karts now carry different strengths , the SNES was great single player,N64 Excellent multiplayer split screen, Double Dash im sorry was a crazy mess of a game more about items than racing but still fun now and again and Mario Kart Wii has excellent online facilities...

Now if Nintendo would just combine the SNES,N64 and Wii Games..........

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,745 ✭✭✭doonothing

I miss Shine Thief so much! The frantic last-few-seconds rush, amazing! I got my entirely non gaming friends around to try out Mario Kart Wii, we played it for a few rounds, had fun, debated whether it was worth getting MK64 out, decided to just go with Double Dash as everyone (bar me :() preffered gamecube controller racing, and MAN, the multiplayer in Double Dash ROCKS. We couldn't stop playing! I really think MK64 set the bar for multiplaying, but Double Dash at least equalled it if not topped it.

Agreed. Don't care much for the battle at all, I still play the N64 'Kart if I feel like one.

Thanks for that, I assumed your region was taken from the console itsel and not in game settings.

i don't get all the hate doled out to double dash, far far *far* superiour to the n64 version imo.. in just about all ways.

less about racing? challenge me on a time trial some day and we'll see how much racing comes into it :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,332 ✭✭✭valleyoftheunos

Garrrgghh the frustration! you're in first, you're kicking ass half way thru the 3rd lap when you get... A blue shell, immediately followed by blooper's ink, followed directly by the POW block. as you pull away you get hit by a red shell, the entire field flys past you most tof them bumping into you as they do knocking you into the bushes by the side of the track. Unless its Wario's Goldmine in which case you get flung off the track.

You are now in 12th, you grab an item box which gives you 3 mushrooms and you finish 10th. So infuriating

Yeah, I agree, Double Dash was pretty awesome, so many of the tracks were excellent designs. Far superior to MK64.

Still neither compare to SNES or GBA Mario Karts(Snaking takes away some of the gloss)

The SNES version was a classic for sure but there are so many added features in DD and wii that a large part of its appeal is nostalgia.
