    Hi all,

Looking to get into biking. I'm a big lad (6' 2", 20st) so I'm looking for something solid. I won't be doing much off roading initially, but still like MTBs.
Budget is €300 - €400 (may stretch to €500 if really pushed).

Was thinking about something like one of these:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24063

    http://www.kearneycycles.com/galway-bicycles-details.php?act=viewProd&productId=267#

    Cheers!
try canyon www.canyon.com! bit like the dell of the mtb world! they sell direct and have a great selection at good specs!

    http://www.canyon.com/_en/mountainbikes/index.html?b=121

the next model up you get better fork and disk brakes! to be hones if you don't plan to go offroad why not just get a hybrid?? if your planning to do mtb 500 is not alot for a decent bike!

    Try this link http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=12525&catID=417

This is an excellent bike for the price. If you can stretch it you should buy it.

On the link you can check out the frame size and it's ideal for you.

    I have the same bike.

It was for sale in Cycleogical in Dublin for €1350 last year.

Kona bikes have really strong frames.

Of these two bikes the BeOne is by far the best.

I'm not sure if they're heavy compared to other mountain bikes as it's the first one I've had.

Don't forget he's a big fella and need something strong.

True about the commuting though a hardtail would be better, it's just the bike is great value at that price.

I've seen a few commuters on Kona Calderas and Kulas around town! but again why bulk a bike when a hybrid will suffice for town biking!

He says he won't be going off road initially, which would suggest he might in the future.

There's no point in buying a town bike if he wants to go off road later as he'd only have to buy another bike.

He could buy a mountain bike and if he's finding it a bit tough on the roads buy a 2nd set of wheels and change them when he needs to.

A nice balance of what your saying would be an onone inbreed! its comes with fix front sus and can easily be converted to an mtb ht bike! common bike amonst couriers and the like and common in the hills! plus its fecking light!

I'm not disagreeing with you, it's just the Kona Kikapu is very good value at that price.

As for the one on e-bay - he could get lucky and get it even cheaper.

    Hi all,

What kind of riding do you plan on doing? Commuting? Long/short road spins? MTB?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭bobtjustice

Im purely a commuter and getting into a little bit DH.
I'd highly reccomend Konas, I own a Dr Dew, just for pure speed and bomb proof frames.

A Kona Cindercone might be a good one to start with.
    http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86415

Or Kona Blast/Delux if you feel like splashing out a bit more.
    http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86399

I tend to stay away from any type of suspension for road cycling, but thats purely preference.
If you're commuting, get a helmet, A GOOD ONE! and some decent lights.

Be safe and best of luck with it.:D

For me it comes from riding konas for 3-4 years and never once having a problem.

    Just because they're the best!!!

I'm selling my Kikapu tomorrow to get a road bike.

I've started collecting bits from E-Bay to build a Kona Mountain Bike.

When I'm finshed the bike would cost €6000 if you were to buy it in a shop.

All I need is the group set and I'm getting XTR all the way.

You some sort of international superstar mountabiker ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭Vélo

No but you can get real bargains on e-bay.

When I'm finished it won't have cost me anything near that but I'll have a serious machine, nearly the same spec as the Hei Hei Supreme.

Kona are not light, but are known to be durable in their all mountain range! to be honest their pricing has gone to hell lately! unless you get an ebay deal!

try ask for a dsicount there! I'd buy a spec from Jimmy Stagg or Mick Jordan in the cycle in sooner!

the specz is great! and hardrock is very well spec'd

... would it be enough to go cycle up in 3 rock in the winter?

    http://www.canyon.com/_en/mountainbikes/index.html?b=120

super bike and excellent spec! german built ;-)

    I just like the Specialized...

I will see how much I manage to save up before october and will decide then I guess.

I love my bikes but I am not too great with nerdie stuff ...;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,038 ✭✭✭penexpers

    Yeah I wouldn't get a 29er.

I wouldn't stick to one brand either - imo Kona make much better MTB's than Specialized.

The Stumpjumper is a fantastic bike - light and fast. Capable of much more than just 3 Rock in the Winter. However, I wouldn't get the 29er (i.e. enormous wheeled) version unless you're very tall - and certainly not without trying it.

    It's him! He's causing it!

Sure Konas are good bikes but once you're spending above a certain amount you won't really get a "bad" bike from any major manufacturer (Giant, Specialized, Trek, Lapierre etc. etc.). The important thing is that it suits the individual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭Vélo

I hope you bought the bike on e-bay. It went for €542 in the end, less than half the price than what it's being sold for on e-bay, never mind what it costs in shops
