Would you buy a putter without trying it?

I've a buyer in the states willing to buy me a putter of my choice, and a pro here who will fit it to me.

I've been considering the Nike IC 20-20. Only based on Golf Digests Hotlist for the year.

I'm a beginner, working off the colt blade putter that came with the starter set. It's far too long for me, and now that I'm playing every week, I'm beginning to appreciate that it is the most important club in the bag. I'm been exercising the maxim that I may as well learn with the correctly adjusted tools.

It's the most I'll have spent on the club, and I wouldn't be replacing it in a hurry. Would you buy it without trying it?

Anyone have any thoughts on this putter in general?

Is there nowhere here that stocks it where you could give it a try? Most golf shops have putting greens in them.

Other than that, if you like the look of the putter and are gonna get it custom fit anyway, I'd say go for it if you're making a bit of a saving. It can be traded in anyway if you feel it's not working out for you.

Also, at the risk of sounding preachy - the putter is not as important as the putting stroke so I'm gonna say you'll be alright.

    Best of Luck with it...

Playing Golf after work tonight - oooh I'm all excited!! :)

I did last year and it turned out to be a disaster. Bought one of these 2-ball things as i liked the look of it.

Three / four months later i was back in trading it in. Best thing is to wander into a shop with a good selection and a putting green and just have a go with a few... that's how i found my current one and i absolutely love it.

    What one'd you get Graeme?

Taylor Made Rossa Daytona 1. Had it just over 6 months now and absolutely love it. A combination of it, dr bob, the purchase of a putting mat and a good bit of practice has done the job.

Green 18 in Sandyford have a nice putting area (best one I've seen in a shop) where you can try out their stock. If you find a putter you like then you can have your friend get you the same spec one. Putters are very much up to individual tastes so I'd advise you to try a few different ones out.

Putters are all about lie and balance and feel. I wouldn't buy one unless I'd tried it out somewhere. I either immediately love the way the putter sits or else I know it's not for me.

I learnt a long time ago that a putter needs to sit correctly and feel right for you......it can be a putter that nobody has heard of before but if it works for you then it's a gem.

I am addicted to putters have 6 at this stage..

HAve 3 scotty camerons inc the original newport which would be my putter of choice.

I got my Odyssey number 2 trimetal without trying it and have to say is great on slow greens but any pace in the greens at all and you are screwed as is way to heavy.

Also got the 2 ball after messing with one and hate the thing just found I pulled everything with it.

I had a Colt starter set with a blade putter. Keeping the putter and got rid of the rest.

I was looking for a new putter and the guy in the golf shop said it's all about how the putter looks just as you are about to commit to the stroke. I liked a putter that was for sale there and purchased on the spot. A Masters MZ-E for €50 (similar to an odyssey 2 ball putter). Off to a putting green soon to try it.

Just in case it lets me down, I will still have my original colt putter.

I've had a range of opinions over the last day.

Best golfer I know said it didn't matter, you'd get used to it, and the stroke was the most important thing.

My pro said the only important thing was being happy with the look of it.

Of course buying a left field putter (i.e. non ping / odyssey) will seriously hamper my trade in / sale prospects if the putter doesn't suit.

Presumably once the putter fits, and I'm well coached it won't matter if I'm using an umbrella?

You said it Uber, once you've got the routine and your stroke boxed off the putter is immaterial.
I'd recommend the Dr Bob Rotella books to everybody who has ever picked up a golf club, as he explains everything to do with the mental side of things very well, and encourages masses of confidence in your routine and swing, which of course is a major factor in playing good golf.
I just finished Putting Out Of Your Mind, try to read it around this time every year and it usually sets me up well for the summer.
I got a box set of his four books for about €22, best golf investment I've ever made.

I read somewhere that he has a new one coming out (could be out already). Anyone read it?

Here you go Graeme, just googled him there and found this, releasing next month.

The second book there doesn't look familiar to me, I thought there was only four.
    Anyone read it?
