How to alter lawnmower carburettor setting?

My Dads lawnmower engine is running too rich and the plug is sooting up.

Would anyone know how to alter the carburettor setting in order to weaken the mixture?

It has an automatic choke and a 148cc petrol engine.

    Thanks! :)

generally three 180 degree turns from fully closed is right. It should be mentioned in the owner's manual.
Are you sure it isn't sooting up because it's burning oil rather than petrol
Also take off the air filter and make sure the butterfly isn't closed.

Thanks Mailman. I don't think he has a manual for it anymore, the mower is 15-20 years old.

I'll pass on the info and see what he says. Thanks very much!

A dirty air filter can also be the cause of running rich.
