Gameboy GamePak Internal battery - Recharge?

OK so I pulled out Super Marioland 2: Six Golden Coins from a drawer and plugged it into my Gameboy color and have had a quick go at, great game, steepish learning curve compared to modern games.

Anyway when I plugged it in was a little surprised to see no game save data but thought I may have deleted them a while ago (it has been a few years since I played it) but also knew that there could be a problem with the battery and guess what, there is. None of my progress was saved when I went back to it this morning.

Is there anyway I can recharge the battery or would I have to replace it? I am crap with tools and junk (seriously cutting wood straight is out side my ken) and would like to think just leaving it on and plugged in would recharge the internal battery. There is another solution which I won't/can't discuss obviously but would prefer to be playing "as intended" on a Gameboy.

I have also come to the realisation that this could effect the Legend of Zelda games I just bought for the Gameboy color so does anyone have a back up solution they use for this type of thing?

This isn't a problem for GBA or N64 onwards but apparently SNES and NES are badly effected by this as well just as I was thinking of kick starting a retro Nintendo buzz.
