(Updates with new info, adds details on MiG-29)
A MiG-29 fighter jet has crashed during landing in Kecskemét (southcentral Hungary) on Thursday. The pilot managed to eject from the aircraft, a spokesman of the Ministry of Defense told local newswire MTI.

The accident took place shortly before 16:00 CET, István Bocskai said.

MTI learned from several sources that the pilot is alive and has been rushed to the infirmary.

The black box of the jet, which will help authorities find out what has caused the accident, was collected from the scene.

The pilot, Zoltán Peszeki, got away with bruises, but he is in hospital so that physicians can examine him for possible internal injuries.

Zoltán Szabó, another pilot who crashed with a MiG-29 three years ago, said he visited Peszeki in the hospital and confirmed that he was fine. He said a pilot in a catapult situation can sustain 15 to 20 Gs, which strains the human body extremely and so it may take a month before he can fly again.

Brigadier-general István Petõ, commander of the Kecskemét air base, said the jet took off at 15:09 CET for air combat practice. The pilot was instructed to make a so-called low pass, which means he had to descend about one metre from the ground and rise back from there again. Following the low pass Peszeki was flying towards the end of the runway, climbing, when for an unknown reason his plane touched the tarmac and bounced back into the air. Peszeki instantly pulled the lever and catapulted. The jet grazed route 44 along the fence of the air base and it crashed, broke to pieces and went up in flames some 25-30 metres from the road.

Petõ said the jet has recently undergone full inspection, so the accident should not have been caused by malfunction.
