Can you move your iTunes library safely?

My sister in law has a laptop with two HD partitions. Her iTunes library is on the C: partition but is now almost full. Can you just move the iTunes library to the other partition and continue as normal without it having any dire consequences? If not, what is the correct procedure to follow?

    Thanks...

I would think it's just a case of moving them and then re-adding the songs to the library so it knows where they are.

Yes, but it isn't very obvious. You need to use the option to "Consolidate" your library in a different folder location, once you also have set iTunes to "Keep music folder organised".

Apple have put up an info doc on this which details all the steps, see below:

Just to be aware that doing that will lose your playlists, playing history, ratings and stuff like that. If all you have is music files though, and you don't care about the rest, then you can move the folder, delete your library inside iTunes and create a new one for the new location alright.

that's cool, nice to know the official way of doing it.
otherwise I would have been manually moving the files around..
