It was hilarious watching that l.night.Probably the only fight ever that was scored 30-24.
As for the main event,GSPs gameplan was interesting. The outcome was no surprise.Serra got destroyed

I highly doubt we'll see Kalib in the UFC again after that. Must be tough to have your own home crowd turn on you and cheer the other guy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

Yeah apparently Nate Quarry broke 5 UFC records in that fight.

    First to score a 30- 24
    Most leg kicks thrown
    Most Landed
    Most body shot thrown
    Most Landed

    haha

    Peace

When I saw his short marathon run before those brutal hammer fists I didn't know whether he was taking the piss or really chasing him.
As a matter of interest, what did starnes have to say in the post fight interview?

you can't help but not like Nate Quarry. He is the worlds slowest puncher, but he usually bangs out a win regardless. What was Starnes playing at? He literally ran away the whole fight. I'm glad Ed Herman lost too, triangles are rare these days.

They didn't interview him, but you could hear him talking on camera, I guess to one of Quarry's cornermen: "**** you. Why aren't you fighting, ******? **** you"

    Apparently he was badly injured.

Thing is, he looked fit, he looked able bodies and nothing was strapped up. Loads of people fight with broken arms, fists, ribs and torn ligaments, sprains etc.

I am sure this performace is gonna hurt his MMA career A LOT more than 6 months off due to injury!

    Peace

Yeah, I agree, he's finished in the UFC unless he has some sort of massive excuse.

The gesture there apparently was because Kalib predicted that he'd arm triangle Nate in the first round!

If he was badly injured he should have stayed out of the cage.

Seemed fit enough to run away though.

Injured or not, he could have done something. I mean that GIF for example, he runs away froma guy who's blinding himself and spinning an arm, or when Quarry did the running man, all he did was flip him off and cover up....throw a damn strike!!!

Just watched it again there, Kalib did try to fight in round 1, moved forward a bit and tried some TD's but he disappeared in the next 2 rounds......weird if he was doing what he claims.

"Just heard Starnes on the radio station

Basically he sets the record straight and backs it up with proof. As many of you know this was his last fight of the UFC contract and he has always voiced his dissatisfaction with his salary. Basically after the Kendall Grove fight where his rib was broken, UFC did NOT cover any medical bills even though it happened on the "work site".

He said that he is one of the many fighters who get injured and never compensated by the UFC. He was well aware that he was on the main card because it was Canada, and this being his last fight he decided to protest in the names of all underpaid fighters and screw over the UFC.
This is NO joke because he claimed that the only reason Dana White officially released the fight bonuses was in order to counter-act the public statement that Starnes is about to make or would have made. However, since the 75k fight bonuses were disclosed Kalib's martyr actions may not be as significant.

Nevertheless, expect an official statement later this week as his gym is holding a official press conference on Wednesday. We all know that the "real" Kalib Starnes would have never fought the way he did and luckily there IS an explanation."

That makes zero sense to me. First of all, nobody knew about this "protest" so it can't have had much of an effect. Second, if he wants to continue fighting elsewhere then his bargaining power has gone down severely. And I doubt any other promotion would pay him when he's injured

If he came out and fought a great fight then he'd have got a better contract. It screwed over nobody but him, the UFC have come out looking good from it by publicly cutting a boring fighter

BULL****, sorry but this has to be the worlds worst excuse of all time. It was a protest, f***ing hell. Had he caught Nate with a stray shot and won I doubt very much he would be going on about his "protest".

He deserves all the crap coming his way.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

Well I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and believe his motive.

In which case he's not too bright and shame on his gym for letting him do it. Silly move. He should have got out there, won the fight and then on the microphone after said: blahdy blah protest blahdy blah. Oh well.

    Peace

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

    Poor show.

I think the protest thing smacks of an afterthought. I think he tried early on, and then just didn't fancy it. It was fairly strange to watch though, I kept expecting him to shoot in after goading Quarry a bit. Doesn't he give him the finger when Quarry does his fake run? Even supposing he was putting up a protest, it was quite a stupid one, to stake his and his gym's reputation worldwide on a matter of money. Wouldn't a t-shirt or a banner registering his protest have been better? Or maybe some harsh words before or after? I don't buy it.

I'm not 100% sure but I think if that were to happen in a pro boxing match, then the referee would be within his rights to call either a TKO or maybe a no-contest after warning a fighter about not engaging, I can't remember but I'm fairly sure it's in the rule book.

Very disrespectful imo, especially to Quarry, who is trying to make a living and trained for months for this fight. Quarry may have been in contention for a 75k bonus if he had an opponent who would have engaged.

    Exactly,

But Quarry is still super classy to the guy. haha. He's some man for one man.

    Just found this:

    http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s6i34135
Canadian Mixed Marial Arts fighter Kalib Starnes has admitted that he was '**** scared' during his 'fight' against Nate Quarry at UFC 83 on the weekend, and that was the reason he ran around the cage non-stop for the whole fight.

The 33-year-old middleweight, fighting in front of his countrymen in Montreal said "I thought - **** this - I am going to get paid anyway - I saw Laurel and Hardy do it once where the skinny one just ran around the ring in a boxing match against this big guy - he won in the end. I just thought I would try that. You know, save getting punched and kicked."

Though some are calling the display gutless and a waste of fans money and time - others say the tactic could have worked.

"Who knows. What if he had a horseshoe or something in his glove?" said tough guy comedian Carrot Top.

Fellow Canadians though are dismayed. Celine Dion called Starnes "spineless" while Star Trek star William Shatner said "As a Canadian who has fought all over the Universe - against aliens who look like frogs and things I am ashamed of him."

Mike Meyers, the great Canadian comic said "It's a sad day for Canada when our toughest guy ****s himself."

Meanwhile, it is reported that Canadian Back To The Future Star and UFC fan Michael J Fox was 'shaking with rage' after hearing of the cowardly display.

Headline: "I **** Myself" Says Canadian Kalib Starnes

    lol

Maia vs Hermann is worth a look.

I had heard Maia was one to watch for, and although his jitz is very slick, I dont think he can make an impact to the UFC middleweight division. He looked very small, and his cardio wasnt up to fighting a bigger guy for three rds. Also, he was leaving himself open for some big shots on the ground, Herman just wasnt the guy to deliver them.

    Enjoyable fight though :)

Its called timidry (not sure of spelling) its against the rules in MMA and boxing, in boxing he would get disqualified for not engaging in the fight..in both its usually a warning then disqaulification..

Thanks Paul yes that's the one. Pretty sure it counts as a TKO for your opponent. I've never seen it applied in MMA. It should have been the other night.

There are similar fouls in judo and wrestling called for passivity.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,803 ✭✭✭dunkamania

from the UFC list of fouls in their rules section

    29. Timidity, including, without limitation, avoiding contact with an opponent, intentionally or consistently dropping the mouthpiece or faking an injury.

    http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=LearnUFC.Rules

Also, apparently its a foul to throw in the towel.

Pride used to dish out cards when fighters weren't engaging enough. A green one meant a 10% pay cut too!
