    Hi all!
Just wondering if anyone has played a bass and six string double neck? If so how is it to handle and also who manufactures them!? Are they expensive? Thanks in advance for any replies!:)

Cheapo chinese ones pop up on eBay daily. They would almost certainly break your back if you were to wear them. lol

Just buy a guitar and a bass. :p

Rickenbacker certainly made one, I think I've seen a few Carvin ones too.

Can't see the point tbh, more trouble than it's worth. Just put one on a stand and spend the hernia operation money on something nice :pac:

Thanks all! Think you might be right, seems a bit too much hassle!

Aria made one too  It was an SB 4 string and a 6 guitar string neck too.

I can't even begin to imagine how heavy that is, even a regular SB on its own is heavy.

I've never seen a double neck bass and guitar combo but the one time I played a double kneck guitar it wasn't the weight that I found awkward but the height of the two necks. The upper neck was too high and the lower neck was too low. Then you have the problem of getting a suitable case and stand for the thing.

If you're interested in playing guitar and bass I would recommend just getting one of the regular single neck variety of each instrument.

Was thinking some more and viewed some more pics and info on the web and have decided to take it on as a project and try create one myself! Wiring might be a problem though! Should i have 2 outputs, one for each guitar(which should be straightforward enough)or a switch and 1 output (might be more difficult?) Anyone familiar with this sort of thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

I think it'd be completely impractical and waaay too heavy. As for the outputs, I'd go with two, and have proper guitar amp and bass amp, rather than one suffering.

    Good luck with that!

As Don says, I think it'd be impractical and also a waste of money. :p

I totally agree with everything you all said! Impractical-yes Too heavy-yes Expensive-Maybe.. A Hernia waiting to happen...........YES! But dont they look cool!! YES!!! Its not like im going to gig with it ( well maybe once or twice!) I think it would be a good project and id have something different at the end of it? Anyone know how the wiring would work if i just had one output and a switch? When i do source the donor guitars anyone interested in me posting my progress??:)

Why not just make a double neck, semi acoustic and electric or, two electrics in different complimentary tunings or something? Something that would be of use! :p Personally I think the look a bit crap, but that's just me I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭crazy chester

Don1 I have to say that the bass/6string double neck looks very nice! Do you really think its crap?? Just think with a loop station and drum machine, 1 man band stardom here i come!!!:D

Of course you'll also need one of these to keep your spine from snapping:

Is there a specific name for the stands that hold a guitar horizontally on stage so you just just step up to it an play? I remember seeing Gary moore use one for his acoustic during a gig in the SFX once. He was able to leave his elctric on his shoulder swung down, and play the acoustic for a bit, then go back to electric. I wouldnt mind on of those - preferable to double neck anyway.

I still think its a good idea! Granted i might only use it once or twice but its still gonna be a guitar i built myself! Now how many guitarists can say that?!?! Any1 any idea on the wiring!? (Any suggestions on a finish for the body?):D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭crazy chester

    Anyone any ideas??:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

    LOL!

I figured you'd have an idea if you have plans to do it. How else do you think you'll build it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

One bass + one guitar + gaffa tape = affordable, and reversable way! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭crazy chester

Com'on lads its just the finish i need some ideas on!:) I dont want to do some bog standard sunburst or laqured solid colour! Maybe some examples on graphics or something different to add to the paint job?? Also if anyone has any idea on how to wire a switch in between the two that would be a huge help!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,065 ✭✭✭✭Malice

i might only use it once or twice
 That seems like an awful lot of effort to go through for something you'll only play once or twice!
Now how many guitarists can say that?!?!
How many musicians ever build their own instruments? Surely they would be more interested in making music?

Done and done again. warmoth sell all you need if you wanna create one yourself. http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/bodies/d_neck.cfm?fuseaction=d_pstrat there ya go, all ya need is on there.

You can pick necks then and all that to whatever taste you have yourself.

Ill link to a wiring for it in a few minutes.

Im a musician and lately have more of an interest in making instruments rather then playing.

As for a finish, you could use tung oil. Depending on the woods you use this could look very nice or like arse! :D

I've also gotten good results using the auto paint from Halfords (Duplicolor I believe?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

Hmmm cant seem to get my hands on a diagram, not sure about the ins and outs of using bass pickups with guitar pickups in the same circuit. I know the outouts can be different and this is why im a little unsure.

If you go onto the seymour duncan forums and ask one of the wiring gurus there Im sure they will be more then willing to help. Sorry I cant be of more help.

Finishwise as Joe said it depends on your wood, some wood was destined to be clear others I feel shouldnt see the light of day but sound amazing.

Its also a bit of personal taste, personnaly I like clear light coats with gold hardwear or colour coats with black or chrome hardwear.

EDIT: Thinking about it Im sure you could possibly run both wiring schemes to teh one jack with some sort of selector switch between the hot wires to output from either one and they can have a universal ground. Dont qoute me on that.
