need new hairstyle (male)

Right I need a new style, badly. I always had the short back and sides thing going on, but Ive just let my hair grow and now ive a massive mop on my head. I dont really know what im trying to achieve.

I have heavy thick brown hair, straight enough but it curls a bit at the tips, its about 3 inches long at the moment and in no particular style. Annoyingly I have a calves lick right in the middle of my fringe, basically just a split where no hair grows.

I have a long forehead so need to keep the fringe I think and my face would probably look a bit like Damon Alburn if that helps.
id go to a hairdresser like Toni nad Guy or something but id just feel mortified or something and the fact I havcent a clue what i want would make it a bit embarressing for me.

    Any ideas?

Just go in and have a chat with a stylist - that's what they're there for. They have people in every day who don't know what they want. They'll show you style books and tell you exactly what will suit you best, and also what will suit your hair type.
I used to be a hairdresser and it really isn't a big deal, I promise :)

sounds mostly likely mine, mines probably a bit longer though at the moment at its longest point (no ruler handy). It goes down just past my eyebrows and covers most of my ears/top of neck.

you don't need to do anything to it, just trim it out of your eyes and get it thinned to take the weight out of it. nothing fancy needed, its the least hassle ive had with hair, no gel or wax, just dry it and you're away.

don't need a salon, any high end barber will do. get a cut every few months and you'll save money.

although throwing up a pic of yourself would help with actual opinions.

Why would you be embarrased to go to a salon? Not all hairdressers look down on their clientelle you know ;-)...

A quality salon would be glad of the business and quality stylist would love to get their hands on someone who is willing to try something different with their hair!

Nice haircut rb, did it take you long to grow it to that length?

I'm just like you, OP, except I don't have a natural part. I'm just going to let it grow, and end up like George Harrisan or Paul MacCathy circa 1969/1970. A beard would go well with the look as well. Seriously. Pretty cool.

it is actually quite handy, it sjust a big mop, looks cool sometimes and a disgrace others. Curls up around the ears and thats what annoys me most. am going on holidays in 2 weeks so will get it cut down a bit first. And its to long at the back methinks.

i may just go into a saloon (the shame if my mates see that), say listen what do you recommend, if theres no ideas, ill just tell them to thrim it a bit and tidy it up, happy days.

no way im putting a picture of myself up! im not Rb!

Yup, same as me. Right at this moment, the hair near the neck has curled right up. Looks cool actually, and half decent. Though after washing it, it looks electrofied.

i may just go into a saloon

Ya goin' into that thar saloooooon with a John Wayne swagger, pardner?:pac:

Seriously, don't demean yourself by going to a salon, man. Let it grow! Imagine your a flower person from the late 60s! Grow a beard and become a Beatle...we can be beard buddies.

He is brave for putting up that pic, eh? Some would stone him for being emo but not me.:D

if you give your hair a quick brush at the ends after a shower when its drying i find it doesnt curl up (or much less).

sersiously, i've always found grafton st barber fine for a cut, only 20e. Once they even had clips in my hair, was praying no one i knew would walk in!

Use a protector spray on the ends as soon as youre out of the shower, gets rid of the curls. Or blowdry it

wasnt this article about what hairstyle a guy should get and not how to keep your hair straight!! anyway if your in the galway area you should definetly go to fat tony's barber, its like no other barber shop its just so good.

do everyone think guy look better with short or long(ish) hair?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

doesnt really matter. only matters if the person in question looks better or not.

Some people think my longer hair is ridiculous looking, some think its great. When I looka t older photos of me with short hair i think its stupid looking and could never go back!

Went to a salon, got it cut and i ****ing hate it. Im so ****ing pissed off you wouldnt beleive, she cut the long parts over my ears which took me months to grow and it looks so stpid, its a disaster.

Im fuming and so dissapointed, looking back i shud of kept it in the style i had and just got a trim.

Arrgghhhh its gonna take months to get my hair back and ive to look fecking ghey in the meantime

    are you me??????

your going through the exact same thing i did a few months back, i went to a hairdressers at xmas and a girl cut the curly bits at me ears(that were almost long enough to start going straight themselves) and i was so so pissed off, just let it grow out again but i always wonder even now how much better my hair would have looked if i hadnt have got it cut that faithful day!!

after she cut it she even asked me if i wanted it spiked after me telling her multiple times i was trying to grow it LONG!!! grrrrrrrrrrr:mad:

from my experience barbers are better at cutting mens hair then hairdressers, im at the road were my hair isnt that long isnt that short but im going away for the summer in a month and have to decide by then..it takes soooo long for hair to grow cutting it off seems like such a waste!

Exactly, i had a nice head of hair that took me ages to grow, went for a trim over the weekend and it was massacured by a salon hairdresweeeer, she was a real sweeer type of girl, loada soverigns etc - she said my hair looked stupid long and that the shorter style she gave me was all the fashion in "redz".

    Seriously.

Needless to say i'll be going to a barbers from now on, (well when i eventually need to get it cut again, its so short now that will probably never happen), what a waste.
Was mortified with my new stupid haircut, got home and washed out all the gel she put in and put it into a better design, just have to make a few altercations and it shouldnt be to bad, but still far short. Ah well at least hair seems to grow quicker in the summer!

its most annoying when people say - you looked better with your hair long :-(

Be thankful she didn't give you a mullet.

    You mean something like this

This man is stuck in a time warp hairstyle wise he never found his way out of the eighties.

go into an irish barbers, i.e. not like a turkish place that does a monday - wednesday deal or anything and just say you need it thinned out and tidied up a small bit but you want to keep the length. thats all you need to say. the short back and sides isnt cool anymore. when you've got the hair cut get a good gel and then just rub it all over you're hair lightly and style it a little bit, a little bit messy like y'know? you'll be sorted then!

I am trying this next time. I cant do hair styles for the life of me. Short back and sides was the be all and end all for me, but no more! This will be the third time I have grown my hair out a bit. Last time I chickened out when it got too long and got the 3 back and sides again. I really want that messy but good looking style.

I desperately need a new hair style/cut. My hair is in bits at the moment and no amount of hair clay, wax etc is helping. I have naturally wavy hair (which I hate) but usually the styling clay I have helps make it look semi decent.

I always went to the same guy in Dublin to get my hair cut who was great but I am now living in Cavan and hav'nt a clue who to go to. Have a wedding this Saturday so want to get a nice trendy style to go with my new suit. Anybody know any decent hairdresers in Cavan?

There used to be a great barber just down from the Farnham arms hotel, sorry haven't been there in years so can't remember what it's called or if it's still there.

Come to think of it, I miss that town :(
