I got an interesting mail on flickr last night, what would you charge for this ? I'm tempted just to give it away free for a copy of his work but I thought I'd ask the experts ;)

I'm sorry to bother you, but I wanted to inquire about your
    photo of a Red-Ruffed Lemur:

I'm an illustrator and, with your permission, I'd like to
do an ink drawing based upon this image. I was wondering if
you would consider this, and if so what the charge would be.
When the drawing is complete, I'd be happy to send a print
    should you want one.

If it was my image I'd happily accept the print in return and leave it at that.

Copyright law probably says differenely, but your man could have easily just "loosely" based his painting on your picture and you would have never known about it.

He was kind enough to ask, I doubt many others would have.

His stuff looks very similar to the O'Reilly book covers.

I'd accept an illustration in exchange too.
Nothing wrong with a good will gesture.

I like the idea of getting a print. Sounds like a fairly fair exchange (as long as he doesn't make thousands from his image of your photo). Maybe ask what his use of the image would be (commercially) and then think about it.

But, if it's for something small, then a print seems very fair.

a nice ink version of the pic would be cool! Its a great photograph too btw.
how much? hes not buying the pic he is just paying for copyright usage. what do newspapers pay? and do you have a method of accepting payment?

Thanks for that, I will just give him the picture for a copy of his work. I looked at that photo on the flickr stats and he found through the flickr search function, I ran the same query to see where I was on it, I gave up after page 10

From the helicopter crash that happened a few weeks back, a national tabloid gave 90e per pic used and rte gave 100e to be shown on the 9 O'clock news.

This is an interesting one. Firstly, Wow - the guy is obviously decent, he went to the bother of asking - i am so impressed with his approach. Secondly, as stcstc says - bugger it should it have been Dublin zoo (perhaps there's a moral dilemma for you). Can't find their t&c though. The t&c may be gotten over by gifting the copyright of it to him - and if the guy wants to gift you a print and you are happy with that then happy days.

As you look at his web site he is obviously a gifted illustrator. His livelihood (i suspect) is selling prints - they are quite affordable. maybe $15 and does a limited run of 500prints/offers framing services and has stock options, etc.. So for arguments sake lets say you hadn't decided to gift him the copyright of your image, the question as to what to charge is rather interesting. If a dollar a print given his 500 number print run then $500 (currently about €310) would be a nice pay day - at 50cent a print, it would still be a nice pay day at €155 compared with what its been reported that national media pay.

Better still Muineach, this is recognition for you and your work. Pretty cool too! Congrats!

    Cheers.
