Am I Crazy?

I'm turning doing offers from PWC and KPMG in Dublin to go work for a niche marketing consultancy in London http://www.dunnhumby.com.

My mum and many others are telling me I'm mad to turn down big 4 brand on CV and a chartered accountancy qualification, am I? I don't enjoy accountancy, isn't this the most important consideration!?

(IMO) As long as you'll be happy doing what you're doing and being rewarded sufficiently for your work, who cares what anyone else thinks. They're not going to be the ones doing it.

If you don't enjoy it, there isn't much point in taking up a post for 3+ years in an accounting firm. Of course it would be great to have the Big 4 on your CV but if you aren't happy, who knows how long you will stick it, you may not get interesting jobs and you may not use it after the 3+ years.

Instead, you could do something interesting, challenging and that will give you good experience that you may enjoy. It's all up to you but whatever you do, make sure you enjoy it!

No you're not crazy, not by a long shot. The majority would jump at an opportunity to work for the big companies as it offers job security
and adds value to your CV.
For me though, you'll never be a millionaire working for the big guys, you'll
go through the incremental process until you reach a ceiling where you will stay unless you leave but If you've spent too long in one place you may just
be jumping into the same position in another of the big guys.

I can speak with authority on the matter as I work for a big one, however what I do is a niche area within the company (4 out of 600 people know how to do what I do) so I wont have the problem of getting fenced in.

The icing on the cake is London, this is the place to be IMO. I will be making the move there soon enough as the kind of money my counterparts are earning there do not bear comparison.

Make your decision, dont change your mind and I'll see you in London.:D

    I agree completely.

A lot of people go through life doing what they're "supposed" to do, or doing what someone else thinks they should do.

These people always end up with regrets.

Assuming you're not a totally selfish, evil person, if you spend your life doing the things you like and want to do, you'll have a happy, successful life.

Another thing as well... there's no rush. Go to London, enjoy yourself, get some experience, and then decide what's next. You don't have to settle down in a big serious job immediately. You have the rest of your life to be serious and career focussed. Personally I think it's OK to float around for a while, tasting different companies and different jobs, and then decide what's best for you long term.

Cheers guys, feel much better hearing people say that. Would you believe your pretty much the first to take this view. Even a random group of middle aged women who sat down in the pub beside us on Friday lectured me and told me I was making a mistake!

Fingers crossed I won't regret this decision. From what I've seen of Dunnhumby they have interesting work and are really going places, growing rapidly and expanding internationally.

I walked away from accountancy half way through qualifying to move to IT, everyone thought I was nuts and now I'm making as much if not more as most of my former class mates and enjoy my job a whole lot more..

You spend a minimum of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week in work, why work in a job you dont like or enjoy? If you want to go for something like that then do it, forget what everyone else is saying, its your life mate..

Best of luck with it.. ;)

Why are you asking silly questions ? If you want to work in company A then do it. People prefer company B because they've heard of it.

    Now are you mad?
