I dont have a video recorder and i want to convert my videos to dvds. I saw this combi which allows you to record from vhs to dvd and vice-versa. I was just wondering does anybody have this combi and if it does a good job of converting from vhs to dvd????

I'm doing a similar thing - have over 300 VHS tapes that I'm converting to DVD. See my thread on the problems I'm having with my Samsung VR355 combi machine.

edit: sorry didn't read the bit about not having a VCR already. I was going to suggest getting a DVD recorder with a HDD and hooking it up to your existing VCR. However a 6 head LG VCR is 75 quid in power city, add this to the cost of a HDD DVD recorder and you might end up with a better setup than going for a combi machine which don't tend to have hard drives unless you payaround 300+ quid.

I have this combi and I can honestly say that it does an excellent job at converting VHS to DVD. I had a standalone DVD recorder and VCR before and that wasnt a patch on this one. This gets perfect copies everytime, sometimes I swear they are better even. It is even perfect on longer recording speed although I cannot comment on the extra long 11 hour one or whatever it is cause I have never used it yet, I imagine its not that great but you wouldnt expect it to be really because a blank dvd is only 2 hours really. It is still perfect copies on the 4 hour setting.

The one thing I will point out is that you may not be able to copy all retail vhs to dvd due to copy protection, particularly disney videos. However, surprisingly all the videos I have tried so far work so macrovision etc may be disabled!! I dont think it'll let you copy protected dvd's to vhs though, although its not likely you'd want to do that really.

It is also excellent at recording to VHS and DVD from scart input from a set top box, sky etc. and also gets a perfect picture from these too, even on VHS! In fact I believe both the scart sockets are RGB enabled in and out on this unit which would explain it and I have never seen this on any other machine.

It will play just about any format DVD you can think of, +&-R/RW and records both as well.
