    Would appreciate your help -I have just bought the ONKYO 605 AMP / REC with a set of Mordaunt Short Speakers witha 309i Sub and the Pioneer 600 DVD
    Have spent today connecting everything up but have run into a few probs
    I cant get any sound out of the SUB -When i switch to the TV Mode i cant get any sound out of any of the speakers - But when i try a DVD The sound comes from the 5 speakers ( But not the SUB)
    I have checked everything in line with the manual but cant seem to sort /figure out what i am doing wrong
    I have set up the system a follows
    AMP and DVD are connect with an Optical Cable - The DVD and TV are connected with a HDMI cable and i have a Scart connecting the SKY Box and the TV
    Would appreciate any advice - thanks

    If you run a test tone from the remote does it find the sub ? Also, did you use the Audessy option to set-up your speakers/sub ? Did the test find the sub ?

    Is your Sky Box connected to the AMP or just TV via scart?

    Hi,

    Eddie is spot on - try his advice. The sub issue is likely to be sound setup.

    Also, have you verified that you have assigned the inputs correctly.
    You need to go into setup and tell what source i.e. TV/DVD is on what input i.e. coax/hdmi etc.

    Easiest starting point might be to tune a radio station and check playback.

    Let us know how you get on.

    It's a great amp and once you get it going you will love it.

    Eddie and Majj are correct , the unit is not ready to go straight after hookup , you must run the setup , look in the manual and find the page where the setup starts , and follow it through , it takes about an hour or more in total , the test tones for the Audyssey are quite loud and a bit freaky , so dont do it just after someone has gone to bed like I did :D ... it wont make you very popular.

    Once the tones have been run it will show a screen on the TV showing what speakers were detected and the levels it has set them at.

    Initially , straight out of the box , and especially with mordaunts ( snap by the way! ) there will be no cut off set for the sub so no sound will be heard from it.

    Many thanks mathias MAJJ and eddiem74 - i really appreciate your help - Will try what you suggested - Am going to take some time off this week when the house is quiet and no one is around to try and get it sorted
    The Sky Box is only connected to the TV via a scart - Do i need to connect it to the AMP

    If you want sound from the AMP you need to connect the Sky box to it. I assume the Sky Box has an optical out, but I am not sure on the standard boxes ? If it does you can connect this to the other optical in on the AMP and assign it to CBL/SAT on the AMP settings. You also need to then go into the sound settings in the Sky menu and enable DOLBY so you get surround sound once available.

    I think many will say leaving the scart to the TV is a better option cos:

    1) it will give you better picture quality
    2) allows you to still watch TV with sound without needing the AMP on

    However if you wanted you can also feed the picture via S-Video to the AMP, sound via optical, and also feed the TV via the existing HDMI.

    When you get stuck in to your setup over the week, feel free to post your questions and we'll do our best to help ! :)

    Brief Update
    I am still struggling to get it all working - Havent made any progress -Checked all the connections again on Thurs night and noticed that the optical cable between the DVD and the Amp was pulled out of the connection at the AMP and plastic fitting at the end of the cable is lodged in the back of the AMP ( Was caused by one of the family trying to get in behind the DVD etc to put on the Television - My fault totally as i did not leave them enough room to easily plug in the Television - Am annoyned with myself for this ) Dont know what i can do here - Maybe get another optical cable and put it in the 2nd optical connection ?
    All the advice which has been given seems very clear when i read it but i cant seem to put it into action
    I am going to try again this week and hopefully can get it sorted -

    Re-read the following pages in the manual, these should hopefully steer you in the right directon:

    24->25
    34->35
    31
    41->45
    46

    (I took pages numbers from the online manual, so hopefully the same as your hardcopy)

    Hey Barsan,

    Sounds like not a great start, but it will be worth it when you get there. Forgive me for asking but can you use a screwdriver to remove the plastic fitting?

    Maybe if your still having trouble come back with what you've tried and maybe we can help here.

    Take heart - had this for a couple of weeks and had my own woes e.g. didn't cop for a while that all my sound from sources wasn't as high quality as I expected. Turned out the sound I was hearing was actually the sound from the optical from my TV. I was going HTPC to AMP (optical), HTPC to TV (hdmi) and TV to AMP (optical). Easily done !!

    Cheers,
    majj
