my brother in law is looking into getting sky digital installed into his house.

when enquirin about getting the "multi room" or the Sky plus they informed him that he would need to install a phone line for this service.

my question or questions i suppose are:

Why do you need a phone line for two boxes when you dont need it for one?

is there another way of doing it without the phone line?

can we just run a splitter cable from the box like you used be able to do with the old mmds and cable?

any help would be greatly appreciated as my knowledge of sky digital is minimal to say the least!

    thanks all.

A phone line is needed to ensure that both boxes are at the same address. There is no way around it if you want Sky TV on both boxes.

You pay a lower sub for the extra multiroom box, effectively subsidised so it has to stay at that address.
You might be able to have 2 separate full price subs without phoneline. Might need to use 2 different subscribers names

You don't need two names. That's fraud. You just have to pay full price for box (no subsidy) or buy a 2nd box S/H. Sky will sell you just a subscription card at normal rate without a phone line.

I've a single box/single Sky HD sub. I'm going to be moving my setup from one end of the room to the other. Have the sub about 9 months and the phone line has been permanently connected since then. It would be handy not to have to run the cable across the room. Can I remove the phone connection altogether?

As it's just a single HD sub, and not Multiroom, Sky tend to be less strict.

I'd not bother with the phoneline, it's unlikely you'll hear anything more about it from Sky.

Is it the same for sky plus do I need a landline, is there a way around this (legal)

You do not need a landline if you have a sky subscription on only 1 Sky+ box.

Thanks for that, I tried to do a booking on Skyireland.ie but it was refused because I selected I do not have a phone line, I selected Sky + and two mixes?

P.S sorry for taking over this thread - did not want to start another - as this is a related q?

I don't think you can order a "no phoneline" system through the website. You'll need to call them, otherwise try an independant retailer.
