my brother went for it last year and didnt get in. Usually well over 1000 apply and they take in like 30ish depending. Are u in college?RDF/PDF. Dont think there is any set number of people who make it through to stage 2 its who ever they think is good enough. Iv heard the final interview is supposed to be quite hard. Ill probally be applying next year or the year after when i finish college.
best of luck let us no what happens either way.

last year there was 1231 applicants, about 180 got through to next round and about 150 got to final interview and 34 cadetships were offered. Dont know figures for this years competition but that gives you an idea of the numbers involved. I heard they are taking on a larger class this year..

They really cut the numbers after the first round.
    Thanks a lot

From what I can see they take such small numbers every year it would be very difficult to get a cadetship. Why not apply to be an officer in the British Army?

Why would they want to risk their lives serving in a different countries army?

You wouldnt pay the insurance on your neighbours house...

Just my opinion BTW, not looking for nationalist v unionist arguement.

Just to 2nd the British Army option. I'm in the process of joining the BA to become an officer. Passed the first stage (Briefing) and on to the final stage(Main Board).
No one batted an eyelid when I was there applying and doing the tests. Everyone was bang on and had a great time. You get to go over and visit regiments/corps you're interested in and best of all the BA pays for all your flights and accommodation through the joining process.

You only live once mate, might aswell do something that you can write about when you retire ;)

Well, I always thought that men joined the army to go to war, that’s what the British army does. The Irish army does not. So, if you want to fight in a war, join an army that goes to war.

Being unable for whatever reason to get into their own, (Irish going to the UK)
Better promotion prospects, pay and conditions (UK to Australian)
Citizenship (various countries to the USA, but i could be mistaken on that)
Playing with "the big toys" eg Main Battle Tanks (Irish going to the UK)
Wanting a new start - various nationalities joining the Legion

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

Why would you put your life on the line for a country not your own. In a "war" that does not concern you?
Also i would have thought that guys join the army to defend their country and famillies.

Dont get me wrong iv nothing against the brits or our lads that join the BA. I just think its daft.

Men have been putting their lives on the line for countries not their own, in wars that don’t concern them since the dawn of time. (I wouldn’t of course; the military, any military just would not be my thing for various reasons.) It’s what men with a sense of adventure and wanderlust do, its part of human nature. And my point is, if it is so difficult to become an officer in the Irish army, (an army that does not fight wars) and a chap really wants to pursue that career, why not apply to be an officer in the British army (they fight wars). Irish citizens are most welcome to apply.

Maybe thats the difference between the Irish and British Army. You guys like to invade other countrys and "go to war" (Afgan).

The Irish Army on the other hand is more interested in preventing wars (peace keeping) and on defending itself.

In Ireland I personally would imagine most of the lads joined the Defence Forces to defend their country from armed agression.

Most of the lads I served with were more interested in having a job that paid the bills TBH.

yeah its mainly a waiting game now
roll on the letters good or bad

as regards the BA part of the attraction of the army is to serve my country not someone else's but fair play to any of ye who give it a go
