Anyone have any experience with Magnet and their ADSL2+ products.
Im interested in switching from my current provider to the 12Mb uncontended package. Good move/bad move?
Smart arent available in the Finglas exchange at the moment and say they have no plans for upgrades there in the next 6 months anyway.
Eircom have upgraded the exchange but wont let me upgrade to their 12Mb. For some reason they prequal my line as only capable of 4Mb despite the fact Im already on their resold 6Mb package.
UPC cover pretty much my entire area except my block so they are out aswell.

I think they don't advertise it to residential customers but you could ring them and ask if they've unbundled your exchange already.

Try and get your line stats and we'll have a look at what your line is capable of. Eircom and therefore Magnet are new to the whole ADSL2+ thing. I recently tried to get our 6 m/bit line upgraded and was told that the line couldn't handle it which I knew was BS because our stats were amazing and we are very near the exchange. So I went about it the long way around, ordered a new line, got 12 m/bit on it, transferred the ip range over and then cancelled the 6 m/bit line.

    Now happy with =

    Line State Up
    Modulation ADSL2+
    Data Path Fast

Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 12282 1021
    SN Margin (dB) 15.50 9.00
    Line Attenuation (dB) 13.00 4.00
    CRC Errors 0 0

Where can I get the line stats?

I am using a ZyXEL Prestige router in bridge mode with an Airport Extreme connected to it. I cant find the routers IP address anywhere in this set up.
If I disconnect the ethernet from router to Airport and connect it straight to my iMac I can get the setup page but the only semi relevant stats I can see is
    DSL Up 6144 kbps / 832 kbps

Roaches St. exchange, Limerick....so how does one get hooked up?, do i have to get a fresh line installed or ported over?....any contact numbers for Limerick?

    Line stats:

    Connection Speed (Downstream)=3072 kbps
    Connection Speed (Upstream)=384kbps

    Line Attenuation (Downstream)=29.0 db
    Line Attenuation (Upstream))=15.0 db

    Noise Margin (Downstream)=23.5 db
    Noise Margin (Upstream)=18.0 db

Can i get the hookup then for 12MB?

You should be able to get 12Mbps on that line.

JuncoPartner, I think you might be only able to get 8m/bit on that line. The downstream attenuation is a bit high.

Richard Dower, you can easily get 12 on that line. Expensive though 169 + vat per month from Eircom! Might be worth your while waiting for the free upgrade to 7.6 m/bit in June.

Crap, tho the Magnet 8Mb would still be better value than what I have...
Im not too up on what these figures mean real world but is it safe to say that the figures I posted would definately rule out getting a 12Mb connection? And that would be based on the physical cable from my router to the exchange so barring that being replaced thats as good as Ill get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 994 ✭✭✭JNive

Will be upgrading to the 8mbps from the 4mbps package with Magnet on Dennehys Cross, never had any speed drops, and service uptime is top notch. We might be getting an even higher speed not too sure yet - will keep ya'll posted

magnet's network is wholly owned and maintained by magnet. they have space in the exchanges and own their own equipment in there. telephone lines remain eircom property though.

there is a difference in the adsl2+ enabled exchanges, they have about 40 across the country including cork, waterford, limerick, galway, portlaoise and dublin.

Also main difference between eircom adsl2 and magnet is that they have a 1:1 contention whilst eircom is still at 24:1.

If when you sign up for a package with magnet you can't get the full speed you have asked for they will tell you and readjust billing to the closest speed to what you are getting, so if you signed up for 12mb and could only get 8mb then you would be told and would only pay for 8mb.

hope this has been of some help.

I have decided to give it a go with Magnet with Line Sharing for broadband on my business account. Hopefully I wont be disappointed and will at least be a reference point here as judging by the lack of responses to my actual question there doesnt seem to be too many here using their ADSL2+ services.
So far I have to say Ive been impressed with the company and the efficiency of their staff in dealing with me. One slightly dissapointing area is the need for signed CAF forms to sign up, it seems strange that there is no TPV process in place to sign up over the phone. Especially as the website tells you that you can sign up in 5 minutes over the phone!
As someone who makes their living in telecoms I suppose a good bit of it for me is they are one of the few companies I havent had any professional interactions with yet and Im curious!
