For those of you who have ever used a bus, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Bus Éireann, shame on you! Your grammar is apalling.

Possibly, I always thought it just said "Operate" and I always scowled everytime I heard it.

It's as if "whoa! it actually operates"

The only possible way to make that any better is to have the voice done by E4 guy.

    "Stand clear, luggage doors operrrraaaaatin'!"

    Hahaha, so funny!!!!! :D

How do you even pronounce that distinctive Irish "t" that sounds like a hiss?

    ttttssss

    Luggage dewrs opp-er-ayittttssss

This train is for Bray! Bray!

    Dart, anyone?

    SHUT UP.
Honestly that is SO the last thing I need to have looping through my head right now. Insomnia coffee a deadline and operating luggage doors DO NOT MIX.

There are actually a suprising amount of threads created on this!

    Stupid bus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,758 ✭✭✭Stercus Accidit

It clearly says operate, not operating.

I had an argument with someone before on this, listen for gods sake, use your ears, not your imagination!

    I am passionate about this.

I think the guy who recorded that message works (or used to work) in Busaras, making announcements, directing people to their buses etc. I remember him as being helpful and pleasant - unlike many of the grumpy bollixes that you come across working in that place.

We stayed in an appartment in Westport before, when you got into the lift this real culchie girl spoke in the flaaatest accent:

    'Doorshs Openin'

    'Doorshs Closin'

    'Goin Up'

    'Fhrisht Floor'

    'Doorshs Openin'

And so on... Was so funny the first few times but started to grate thereafter. :)

Why do they say the place names in Irish but not the "This train is for" bit?

    Museum, Ard Museum

'Alight at dundrum for bus services' I've only ever heard alight being used in conjunction with trains/platforms and the like. Can one alight from ones car too?

Also female voices in lifts 'Going Down' in a posh english accent, yes please!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

The NYC subway in a rather come-on-down/price-is-right voice - "Stand clear for the closing doors :)"

They're not very good at Irish.

They tried asking for help in the Teach na nGealt, but were shunned ;)

Hmmm.. I always though it was "Stand Clear. Luggage doors in operation."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

    He clearly says operate!

I've has arguements about this before, there's no "ing" at the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 984 ✭✭✭NextSteps

Well, it's obviously a direct order to the luggage doors - kind of an Open Sesame. But why do they have to stand clear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

    Stand clear; nitpicking nerds operate.

Do they pronounce the 'Bré' part with a silly falsified Gaeilge accent, like your one does on the Luas?

I think that's great! It never gets annoying.

I always thought it was 'Luggage doors in operation' or 'Luggage doors operating'.

Whatever it is it gets seriously annoying when it doesn't stop once the luggage doors stop operating!

I bang my head slowly against the bus window when I hear it.
It was one of my inspirations for learning to drive.
Where do they get the gobsh*tes that do these voices? Stephen Hawking doesn't know how good he has it...

Well it bloody well does confirm it.

No no, its a silent "ing"

Oh wait, if its silent, he doesnt fucking say it.

    ...luggage doors operate

Underlined as he really spits of the final T sound, making it even more obvious.

Watch the video, listen over and over again,

    I know I wont.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Ah I'm convinced it's operAYtin'. My grandparents from Meath spoke like that - the "ing" would be there but barely audible.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭jenizzle

I had to listen to that soopid voice every Friday for 4 years, and I'm pretty sure its 'operate' or 'operaysh'. Even the other Meath people say so!!

Its operating. I know because I remember when the buses were first bought, they had a sexy female english voice saying the phrase. Definitely 'operating'.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,556 ✭✭✭MizzLolly

It definately says 'operating', not operate.

Yeah, like the feckin announcements on the Mk4s. Drives me spare any time I hear them, takes ages in Irish then takes ages in English too. Give me the Mk3s any day. The announcements on the DART are grand, short, simple and to the point... when they're working of course!

But back on topic, I always thought it was "luggage doors operate." And I thought the same thing, "eh, that sounds wrong."
