(1st poll for me- apologies if it doesn't work)

It's easy to get banned from other biker sites for "cage talk" but it seems half of the bikers I know, including myself, are mad into cars aswell.

We all hate those inconsiderate, ignoramuses who use cars as shopping trolleys who never learn how to drive 'properly'. Is it really fair to tar all 'cagers' with the same brush, discriminate against even the conscienstious ones and ban all cage talk even though to most, cars and bikes are very closely related topics??

Are you into cars AND bikes?

I use a car as a shopping trolley...
who never learn how to drive 'properly'.

Ah right so the type of car you drive dictates how well you can drive?
That's funny, because some of the very worst driving I've ever seen has been in cars that are definitely not shopping trolleys.
I drive for a reason, when I have to, and can't say I enjoy it much, but I put as much effort into doing it well as I do into my riding.
Is it really fair to tar all 'cagers' with the same brush
No, just about 90% of them  There ARE considerate and observant cagers out there, it just so happens that most of them are bikers...
and ban all cage talk even though to most, cars and bikes are very closely related topics??

Cage talk belongs in the cage forum, as bike talk belongs in the bike forum, baby talk belongs in the parenting forum.. you get the picture.

No, but there are cars out there that give an indication of the driver's driving ethos because you know that if someone has decided that buying such a car is a good idea, the majority of those owners of such cars probably know nothing about cars, driving or motoring in general.

Learning to drive is something that is up to the individual to decide how anal they want to be- if your car and your motoring life means nothing to you, then yes, the vast majority of those kinds of cars, you will find, will be owned by dozy, distracted, dangerous drivers.

Well if you go over to the motoring forum here and post a topic about a van, truck, bike or boat engine or anything related to vehicles or motoring, not only will you not be told FO or be banned, you will get a helpful answer or at least a point in the right direction.

On some bikersites you can go to 'off topic' section and talk about the match, the garden, the weather, the holidays, the job, post pics, porno, anything- as long as it's not cars. That's just plain biggoted IMO considering the poll shows that over 50% of bikers (so far) are into cars, too.

If I posted this poll on some of those sites, I would be banned, for sure. Just because the cornerstones of those sites are part of the minority that prefer apples to oranges and think that because they're different and completely unrelated in every way, makes it reasonable to impose a gagging order on the majority.

(ps, contrary to your little rant at me on this forum in the past, I've entred the exclusive world of biking and have learned to drive bikes and can confirm for the record that being a conscientious cager helps learning to to drive bikes enormously. I'm taking my time, learning with care, avoiding the speeding and have every intention on doing what it takes to pass my test and be as safe a rider as possible. Being a cager, was more than a huge head start.

I passed my assessment the day after my training and my instructor said it won't take much to get you ready for the test because 'you obviously know your rules of the road well and are very comfortable in traffic and on the road in general'. The same day, a total noob to motoring started and going by her day's progress, she's probably still receiving training

For the record, my trainer is also a car nut).

    This is bunk.
Would you make such a claim in the bike world, e.g. Deauville riders just want to get from A to B in comfort and therefore 'know nothing about bikes'?
because you know that if someone has decided that buying such a car is a good idea, the majority of those owners of such cars probably know nothing about cars, driving or motoring in general.

If the car looks badly maintained and not cared for you may have a point. Otherwise, that's rubbish. Just because you buy a car to fill a need (as opposed to a want) doesn't make you a lesser driver. The vast majority of drivers just want a reliable car that their family fits in and that, within the confines of their budget, looks good! It's OK to indulge your motoring fantasies if you are young, single, and have the cash. Throw a spouse and kids into the equation and priorities change.

Learning to drive is something that is up to the individual to decide how anal they want to be- if your car and your motoring life means nothing to you, then yes, the vast majority of those kinds of cars, you will find, will be owned by dozy, distracted, dangerous drivers.

Utter rubbish. I have seen very expensive, sophisticated, specialist cars driven with great carelessness and inattention.

On some bikersites you can go to 'off topic' section and talk about the match, the garden, the weather, the holidays, the job, post pics, porno, anything- as long as it's not cars. That's just plain biggoted IMO considering the poll shows that over 50% of bikers (so far) are into cars, too.

This is not a 'biker site'. It's a biker forum within a large, general discussion site. If you want to talk about anything other than bikes, there are plenty of other forums here better suited. Another reason 'not to go there' is that there is a history of car vs. bike trolling and flaming here, that is the only reason the bike forum was split off the general Motors (i.e. all motorised vehicles, as it was then, not just cars) forum in the first place.

If people subscribe to a particular forum on boards, it's because they want to read about the topic of that forum. If you did a poll suggesting that 90% of bikers were into Man United or Liverpool, would that mean we should be discussing football here instead of in the Soccer forum? What are bikers' views about turnips, or broccoli?
...makes it reasonable to impose a gagging order on the majority.
Any of Boards admins will tell you straight out that there is no right to free speech on Boards, and that 'fight the powa' posts belong in Feedback :)

I've only recently got into bikes, and I absolutely love them, rarely have a found an interest I've got so infatuated with so quickly. Saying that, people ask me, "So are you going to get rid of the car now?".. The Answer "F**K NO! I'm going to have my Cake and I'm going to EAT IT TOO!

The feeling a bikes gives you is unique and very special, in the 3 months I've had my bike (and its only a little 125) I still get giddy like a child with excitement sometimes. Passing traffic, tearing upthe Wicklow mountains etc, its a great feeling... However, there are just so many more ways in which a car is cool fun and exciting too.

Thing is, bikes are cheap, and most people will generally be able to afford a high end or very exotic bike if they really want. With cars however, most people will never get into the High end of things. How does a 10k car compare to a 10k bike? No question, obviously. However the high end cars have much more to offer than high end bikes.

I'm currently thinking of buying a E46 BMW M3. Yes for a fraction of the money I could get a new Ducati or something similar (lets forget that I'm still on a restricted license). However I'm not. I'd be happy with a mid range bike (in the pipline), and a more high end car.

It's horses for courses at the end of the day. But I've never really understood why bikers are so anti-cars, calling them cages etc. I consider myself a Petrolhead - I like engines, i don't discriminate. When I used to do a lot of Mountain Biking - there was a similar thing between us and "Roadies" - but really the difference between mountain biking and road cycling is a lot more obvious.

Cars and bikes are both cool in their own different ways - saying one is completely sh!t and the others is ten times better, is just gay.

I love my car and I love my bike, there I have said it. I think it is a pity that some people pigeon hole themselves as either bikers or cagers. I enjoy both though I am a biker by choice and a cager by necessity. But this is a bikers forum so lets talk about bikes.

Boards.ie is a chat site. Everything on Earth is discussed here within reason and it is open access for most stuff. If you want to chat about Cars in the Bikes section then you are missing the point, same as chatting about Ketchup in the Mustard section, if you catch my drift.

Biker sites (biker.ie, irishbikerforum.com etc) are BIKER sites for talking about bikes and are entitled to restrict the content accordingly. There are plenty of sites where you can discuss both (visordown.com etc) but you can't expect sites to change their policies to suit YOU. The bottom line is if you don't like these policies, go somewhere else (here for instance) and chat about both cars and bikes in the relevant sections to your hearts content.

'cptr (two bikes, four cars, two rats, two mice, two dogs, two kids, mortgage, mountain bike, too much time on the internet)

im not mad into cars but i do like them (dont own any though)

i dont mind cage talk if its relevant, but it does piss me off on other sites when you get the bike nazi's screaming cager at the slight hint of anyhting other than 2 wheels

chatting about Ketchup in the Mustard section

Maybe I'm not being clear. I don't want everyone to talk about everything on these sites but when 'off-topic' areas are provided where you CAN talk about anything no matter how crude, vulgar, low-brow or depraved......EXCEPT cars:confused: That's like the 'No Homers Club'.

(Our survey says:p)70% of people so far enjoy both cars and bikes and you would really have to have those blinkers on to say that biking and caging are that unrelated. Think about technical threads; 'That happened to my car and it turned out to be this'. BAN!!! 'You can get those is a car accessory shop'. BAN!!! 'Oh no, I've left me bike keys in the car'. BAN!!! 'I always get my car tyres here and they're great'. BAN!!! '.....and then it slides neatly in'. SAFE. I buy my shopping in Supervalu. SAFE!!! My cat's name is mittens. SAFE!!! What's fair minded about this- they're not trying to discuss kiddy-porn, their trying to talk about a topic that is very closely related the basis of the site.

In other words, it is a pretty dumb IMO to silence the 70% majority because you really think you're a double-hard, smelly hardcore biker and double-hard, hardcore smelly bikers only talk about this and would never talk about that. I think it's defining yourself by what you are not, rather than what you are. Others in history have done this, too. If you really want to open a public forum that is intended for double hard, smelly harcore bikers only, there should be some kind of initiation for vetting their hardcore smelliness. These are extremely liberal public forums, not exclusive private clubs.

I would say that your analogy works better as follows. It's a mustard section where anything off-topic goes from the mundane to the extreme and everything in between. Absolutely NOTHING is taboo.... but you are never allowed to refer to other condements, because afterall, it's a mustard forum, and only mustard may be spoken about, now have a look at this female genitalia. I call that brainless and childish. If it was made clear that anything not related to mustard and MUSTARD ONLY woul get you banned then that would be a little more fair and clear. Thick-skulled, but fair and clear.

My point in a word is that although I could actually FO if I don't like it, actually no, it's not okay to push people around and censor them considering how innocent a thing it is that they want to do. Maybe Nazis is simply what they are.
