Killer App

Any opinions on what is likely to become the must have game or killer app for PS3?

Nintendo has Mario and Xbox has Halo 3 what about PlayStation?

I have two friends who own PS3s but neither has any games for them, they are both quite happy playing their 360s until, as they put it "something decent" arrives on PS3.

what will be the first thing that is going to make people think, "I have to have a PS3"?

MGS4 seems to be kinda divisive, people either love it or hate it. Those who Love it often seem (perhaps wrongly) to be in the Fan Boys camp, I wonder if MSG4, as impressive as it no doubt will be, will actually sell many more consoles.

GT5 is sure to be highly impressive also but agian, is it going to grab people an actually flog machines?

    Same as Halo then.

It is being packaged with the new 80GB version of the PS3, and I personally know people who are waiting for that, so I do actually think it will sell a lot of consoles.

    IMO yes

Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and possibly Haze (if it truely will be released in May, I think).

Also, Drake's fortune / Call of Duty 4 are very good.

    Who dares not enjoy halo3!:D

I suppose its true that MGS4 will sell some units esp as part of a bundle.

unreal tournament > halo online.. fact, UT3 or Halo both dont appeal to the playstation gamer, they perfer COD4 style games. Thats why they will be waiting for killzone, and resistance 2 and haze.

For the playstation gamer, all them games offer more than halo.

For a xbox gamer, halo is what they want, hopefully they will get ut3 soon, and a modable ut3 as 360 gamers should love it, its a great game.

There is no such thing as killer app anymore though, as generally people who buy into one console predominately, dont really see the rivals games as must haves.

Its like having sonic and mario fans, both like things a bit different. Its that simple.

I think the ps3 all ready has games that warrant playing.

Little big planet and Home will be the big attraction for a lot of people

I read an interesting article which argued that GTA could be a massive console shifter for the PS3 and i'm inclined to agree with it.

The argument went that GTA appeals massively to the casual gamer, the gamer that isn't interested in online, or DLC, or achievements, or spec etc etc. Many of these people see GTA as a Playstation brand and see the two as going hand in hand together. I have a fair few mates who would fit this description and recently they have talked about shelling out for the PS3 because of GTA alone.

Microsoft will no doubt have swayed people who own both consoles that the Xbox is the console of choice for GTA, but does this really apply to the casual gamer. Probably not, and this is the market that the games company will covet the most. Fanboy's will always buy a companies system regardless, that's a given, but its the casual gamer that will be the difference maker in the console war, and it is a fair argument that the casual gamer sees Playstation and GTA as one of the same.

Sony have never relied on a single game like their competitors.

The PS2 had Gran Turismo, MGS, Final Fantasy, God of War, Team Ico, SOCOM, Singstar, Buzz, Eyetoy, Jak & Daxter, Wipeout etc.

None of them are synonymous with the platform like Master Chief or Mario, but all of them and others added up to being comfortably the best games catalogue in existence.

The PS3 has follow ups or sequels to all of them on the way, along with lots of new IP like Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Afrika, Prototype etc.

Sony have always been the 'something for everyone' console and I think that's continuing.

Have to disagree with you there, if I were only interseted in GTA I'd go for the xbox because it is so damn cheap. I could have an xbox, GTA and an extra controller before I'd even paid for my PS3.

Does anyone know if the PS3 version is going to feature better visuals or added features?

LBP has huge potential- if successful and well-promoted it will attract social gamers and women. Home will just tie the whole online experience up in an interface that currently has no rivals (assuming it works well).

Well the 360 version is going to have exclusive downloadable content and the vast majority of multiplatform games perform better on the 360 so I'd say no.

I'm inclined to agree that GTAIV will shift a lot of PS3 consoles on launch since people think GTA is a Playstation only brand. The casual gamer isn't going to know that it's also on the xbox 360 and the casual gamer is the vast majority of the market for the game.

The PS3 version will have downloadable content but it's exclusivity or any details beyond that are unknown. Visually it's likely to be much that same as the 360 version, possibly with a better frame-rate.

That's already been debunked as untrue.

The only legit info as far as the different versions go came from 1up, who's reviewer said Rockstar told him the PS3 version performs slightly better but he couldn't tell by playing it.

The only other difference is that the 360 gets achievements while the PS3 gets optional sixaxis control for vehicles, which supposedly works reasonably well with practice.

I'll be getting the 360 version since I know a lot more people with 360s to play online, it's a close one though since I prefer the PS3 controller and the fact it doesn't sound like an aeroplane taking off.

Split screen on the PS3 version...

Not completely followed all the GTA talk (not exactly a rabid fan),
so like I say, I couldn't say whether or not the review is true or bogus,..
But in fairness to the fella, he does mention a great deal of specifics which could only be relayed by someone who has played both, such as the install option for the 360, trivia on the PS3 install, graphical pallet differences etc etc..
Guess more reliable reviews will either confirm or deny such things..

Of course, you could have idiots on both platforms trying to one-up on the other by making up advantages over the other version..
Personally, frame-rate will win the day over which version to get right now, cause either way the eventual PC version will supply the best version as was the case with Vice City and San Andreas..

Not interested in Downloadable content, Achievement points, Spit-screen options, Online etc..........if the 360 version has the smoother game experience, its the one to get.......if the PS3 version has, then thats the one to go for..
If they're both the same........PS3 wins be default of the console hardware..

I taught that bundle was for the US only. I haven't seen any mention of it for Ireland (or Europe) on any sites.

Do you have a link on any info for this?

These are differences observed in other titles so it could just as easily be a guess. Odds are good the graphical differences will be about right.
