Boards.ie in the year 2020 ... what will it be like?

    Greeting ladies and gentlemen.

I have been thinking about how boards.ie might evolve and change with advancing technology over the coming years. I'm not talking about "thanks" buttons or additional pacman smilies etc. I'm thinking of what might be possible in about ten years time if technology keeps improving at its current rate. For example, if we have interweb speeds 1000 times faster than now combined with vast improvements in hardware and software, neural nets, 3d monitors and 3d imaging/scanning technology etc etc etc. (might sound far fetched but its coming!).

So what do you think boards.ie will be like in the year 2020, and is there anything you would like to see that technology currently prohibits? (2020 is about the time Ray Kurzweil predicts the singularity btw). I know its a difficult question, but let your imagination run wild!!!

I have a few ideas on this myself, but I'll wait to see what ye lot think :D

Excellent and interesting idea ... how do you see that working?

Btw, but is that possible with current technology?

I predict that in 2020 people will still be posting about how "unfair" their bans are, and how hard done by they have been by the "conspiracy".

No matter how much technology changes, people tend to stay very much the same..

Easily possible, just record yourself and upload to youtube, and use tags to imbed the video, thus video posts.

We may be able to post real cats in feedback by then too, which will replicate in every readers display unit, leading to planet of the lolcats. Good times!

Truthfully though I can see it being the exact same except with a new generation of users

Good point ... have to agree with you there!

Do you think we'll be able to reply to the "fight da powa" brigade with some kinda robocop-mutant-cyber-lolcat that will materialise in 3d and ravage the **** out of people?

More efficient banhammers for mods, so that spammers can be quickly dealt with. :D

Crappy quality is available now. Plus it's effort the way Karl Hungus said to do it. I could see it being built into vbulletin and HD+ cameras in all pcs with high speed connections.

Ability to post from any phone from anywhere in Ireland.
Posters will take place in real time online discussion with webcams and mic's so users don't have a chance to google for answers before replying.

Boards will be a political party with more votes than the PD's and I might be unbanned from Politics to help out :D

Someone in 2020 will dig up this post and go "LMAO!".

Followed by loads of "lol"'s and "+1"'s.

And someone will probably post the 2020 version of rofflecopter. Like roffleflyingcar.

CuLT actually has a plan for the longtearm development of boards..

As I understand it, he has been working for the last two years on a way to fully integrate his brain into the boards servers. This project is nearing completion (Hence all the database errors recently)
Next all he has to do is use some minor (Possibly google banner based) subliminal messages to assert his full control over all the users.
Apparently research indicates that anybody with a post count of under 1500 is epically vulnerable.
After the theory is established and with boards as the central hub of his ever expanding techno empire, CuLT will advance across the planet uprooting governments and ruling us all with an iron fist..

    Lolcats is futile...

    We are the Boards...

Good god. Thats what three days working with 4 hours sleep does.. I think my mind has actually snapped.

This is interesting. I definitely think this is possible (integration with Skype etc) and likely to happen in a lot of virtual communities over the next few years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Gandalf23

@ Wazdakka ... this might not be as far fetched as you think. Ray Kurzweil envisages exactly such things by 2020 ... any interested geeks look here and here.

Imagine that ... all boards.ie user consciousnesses uploaded to the site to intermix and expand and learn and exist forever and ever in a wonderful virtual community.

    Oh fcuk!!!!!!!

Each post will carry a carbon tax!

Boards.ie will have its own TV show where the posters will read through posts of the week and posters will take part in live debates where cat's aren't allowed to be thrown around the studio, in fact it will probably replace the Late Late show.

Boards will become a super consumer group i.e. boards co op where users get discount based on the number of posts and date registered. Subscriptions will rise to 1,000 a year and will be on an invited basis only as the popularity of boards after their Live TV show will reach huge numbers

AI moderators will have replaced human moderators.

The text generation will have grown up and no one will be able to spell anymore, so evry1 wl pst lk dis. Although boards will have the additional speak-your-posts service, which will have a breathy sexy voice that will recite posts to you if you really cant be bothered reading them anyway.

AH will have its own, separate forum, where full scale nude pics of Yore Ma are permitted.

And the mods will be able to remotely administer electric shock treatment to anyone who p's them off. Bansticks will be so passé.

He will then Nuke the planet, givng rise to a battle between man and machine.

In the future of this terrible war a robot will be sent back in time, to try and destroy CuLT's mother

Failing, they will then send a more advanced model afer CuLT himself, who is profecient on a small scrambler type motor bike (the card skimming bastard)

it'll all work out in the end though

    dundun dun dun dun.

Assuming we've all taken our iodine tablets and survived the inevitable nuclear disaster/meteor/global warming etc. Boards.ie.earth (I'm assuming aliens will be around by then necessitating the .earth) will consist of a bunch of mutant messenger pigeonrats carrying our posts from place to place for other boardsies to read. What's left of the actual internet in the post-apocalyptic era will likely be heavily censored and riddled with government spies and thus the need for mutant messenger pigeonrats. On the plus side, lolcats form a core part of a pigeonrats diet so most feedback threads will be less cluttered.

It will be revealed that Victor is actually 17 different people as nobody can really post that much.

The "Here's what I saw today" thread in the motors forum will be amalgamated with the "I saw an abandoned classic" thread in the motors-classics forum since car production will stop around 2017 as no new fuel source will be found to replace oil. Sadly the last car to ever roll off an assembly line will be a Nissan Tiida. :(

    I also do palms. :D

    • People will still be complaining that we don't have flying cars yet
    • Txtspk will have been adopted into the dictionary and be in normal use. To try and be cool and different, teenagers will write out a word, import it as an image into Microsoft Photoshop and cut the bottom half off of it. They shall be ridiculed.
    • You will have to be an emo to become a moderator. Feedback will be filled with threads such as "Why won't the users understand me", "Get rid of pac-smilie, it looks too happy an makes me sad" and "Can we arrange the drop-down menus in the shape of a crucifix"
    • Cats will have been made extinct after an unfortunate incident involving someone trying to make an image saying "AIDS LOL". Lolcats will therefore be replaced with Lol-ginger-people
    • People will access the internet and boards via neural implants. A VB plugin will allow the administration of electric shocks via the ban button. Beruthial will become the first person in history to face 317 seperate simultaneous murder charges.
    • Atari will have finally released a new games console, promising an unprecedented 64 billion quantam bits. It will turn out to only be two 32 billion quantam bit consoles duct-taped together, be a huge failure and become the new default option on polls, finally replacing the Atari Jaguar
    • Bubbles will be unbanned
    • The Politics forum will be closed for safety reasons after a thread on which everyone appeared to agree
    • Several feedback threads will immediately appear in the aftermath of this from people demanding the right to post that Bertie was a liar
    • The Paranormal forum is renamed "Science"
    • After Hours will become the first multi-human entity to be elected to the Seanad. It will be placed in charge of a policy steering comitte on imigration. It's first policy document will be delivered 3 years late and consist of the phrase "Yore Ma !" written 17 thousand times.
    • The Scientology forum will be the most popular forum on boards.
    • Users from the Microwave and Time-Machine forum will travel back in time preventing the forum ever being made, "just for the craic like". The resulting temporal paradox results in many users experiencing "Datastore Errors" when trying to post. Luckily Regi is able to install some more RAM and reverse the polarity of the flux capaciter getting everything running smoothly again.
    • National obesity levels will soar as the fitness forum becomes so popular that people sit posting on it all day instead of excersising
    • People will continue to post in Personal Issue asking how to find love
    • The Green Issues forum will be pretty quiet after everyone has decided that global warming is actually pretty nice and they will all spend their time sunning themselves on the world famous Kildare beaches and picking pineapples out of trees.
    • A new Boards.ie maternity hospital will be opened in Dublin (which is now actually in Kildare thanks to global warming), roughly 9 months after BGRH and TLL decide to hold a joint beers.

Gordon will be dishing out his one millionth ban while elsewhere on Boards, Victor will be submitting his one billionth post.

    - Pighead finally masters the art of posting in the first person.

    - To celebrate its one millionth post, the bar in BGRH starts selling real beer, delivered through recently installed ultra-high speed cabling. However this isn't available in Leitrim as they're still on dial-up there.

    - Trolls, spammers and shills are no longer simply banned from Boards, they're deported to a remote jungle island with no way off and no facilites where they must fend for themselves. The daily show, I'm a Muppet, Get me Out of Here, becomes Boards TV's biggest ratings winner.

    - Boards history is created when a whole month goes by without someone demanding the closure of the mustard forum.

    - Approval for the Microwave & Time Machine forum is expected "any day now".

    - Meet the Spartans is re-assessed and is now considered to be a modern classic. It becomes Film of the Week for an unprecedented 37th week in a row, but as the forum is private this fact goes largely unnoticed.

    - The Ladies Lounge welcomes its 1,000th mod since its inception.

    - Madeline McCann is found safe an well, thus necessitating the closure of the longest running thread in Lolocaust.

    - Rep is re-instated on a trial basis. Boards implodes one day later.
