Lets build a list of cheap subnotebooks. All the big vendors want to replicate the asus eeeeeeeeeeee I've seen plenty of them pop up on the register but not sure if they're out. I want to get one but not sure whats on the market at the moment :)

    Toshiba Libretto 50/100/110
    Fujitsu B110/B112/B140/B142
    Fujitsu B21** (2131/2175/etc)
    IBM 240X
DELL LS500/X200/X300 (X300 borderline, still a bit loud on the old €s)

...to get you started, there's tons more.

Cheap subnotenooks are only a very recent development.

Subnotebooks until the EEE have traditionally been the most expensive type of laptop, despite being also the most castrated performance-wise.

Then the XPS and Alienware uber-gaming types were catching up with them money-wise until those became a bona fide established market... about the same time everyone and their dog decided that they needed a laptop at home (despite not being professional execs always on the move).

Now laptops have become a fashion accessory/lifestyle must-have, so there's only going to be more and more niche markets & products across a vast range of price points.

The EEE (and similar) I'd class as the second true "non-professional consumer" -dedicated type of laptop in the history of laptop development (the first one being the "gaming laptops"... which aren't that portable anyway :p)
