    Evening All

My new MBP arrived today :D , I'm absolutely delighted with it. It's going to take a while to get used to the OS again. I had a mac mini before but I barely used it.

One quick question regarding the battery, is it ok to keep it plugged in when it is fully charged?

    Thanks

    Mick

Its perfectly ok to leave it plugged in when fully charged, Its worth calibrating your battery when new and every few months thereafter to maintain the best possible performance apple doc here on the proceedure Clicky

here's a more specific, Mac OS question. Can Quicktime play xVid's? I downloaded the codec last night but the accompanying text file said I had to install xvid 5??

    Hi dubmick

As far as the battery is concerned – Apple doesn't recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. (but I do)

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

I've been using a MBP for the past year now and use it 8 hours a day with it plugged in about 95% of the time.

I've lost about 20% of the battery life over the past year. (I guess from having it plugged in all the time). Thats according to a useful app called coconut battery which measures the capacity of the battery.

Keeping in mind that lithium-ion batteries have a life span of only 3 years anyway (chemicals inside degrade), I would still keep mine plugged in, despite what apple says and despite the fact that I lost 20% in 1 year. I just plug it in and forget about it – at least I know my battery if fully charged when needed.

For the codec problems, like xVid's, I've always used a plugin called 'Perian'

I'd also recommend using VLC instead of Quicktime, where possible - personal preference really.

Yeah get VLC, it'll play anything.
