What to do about work?

    Hi all,

I was hoping to get a bit of practical advise. My story is as follows, I am just 23 finish an IT course, working in a company for the past seven(ish) months as IT support. This is shift work and I am on nights one week, days the next and on call every third weekend. I know many would say I am lucky to have a job and I should just be stoic about it all.

I am just not enjoying my work, I know I am getting brillant experience and I am being exposured to many applicaions and infrustrue topics, this still does not cut it with me. At the start I thought this was just me being unsure of things in a new job.

I rarely see my family and friends as there is a lot of overtime involved in the position, this is really bringing me down. Okay I may only be 23 but I know what is important to me.
I have an illness in my past and all the extra work load is getting to me slowly but surely. I dont want to go back to the level of illness I was at before.

I am sure I am not the first nor will I be the last in this situation. Should I hang on in there for a few more months at least for the cv so it does look like I am job hopping.

    Any help would be great.

I've worked shift work/weekends before and it sucks. The economy is only going to get worse, so I recommend you start looking for a new job now rather than in a few months time.

If your health is at risk, and your job is getting you down, I reckon you are doing the right thing by questioning your current situation.

If possible, stay in your current job while you look for something new.

Working nights is great for one reason: you can do interviews in the morning:cool: Also, as you've passed the 6 month mark (any less than 6 months experience isn't really seen as useful), you'll find it easier to get a job. Best of luck.

Depending on your experience in IT, you might have plenty of doors open to you.

I know a company in Limerick for instance that are looking for support people. It would be a pretty technical role, requiring to debug large chunks of Java code. Hours are flexi-time and the pay would be pretty decent.

Maybe if you us give a better idea of your skills people might have job suggestions for you.

Well I am good with the hardware side and desktop support in IT. I have a degree in software development.
In work I deal with ordering and vendors, dabble in networks and telecoms (user setup, phone, pagers etc).
done my share of pc repair and trouble shoot.

Personally I love working with young people and I do this at the weekend teaching and mentoring. I am an instructor and examiner.
I am Highly organised and find I often get landed with a lot of jobs because the way I dealt with previous problems.

Not trying to sound like I think I am brillant, but I think I am a good people person, and a hard worker, generally if can pick things up if they are shown to me.
I am not too proud to ask for help when I don’t know something. If people or a company has been good to me and fair, I am a loyal worker and will stick with them throughout.

In the future I would love my own business though I realise this is a long way off.

    Any suggestions?

Ever think of maybe looking to FAS for a job as an instructor there?

A few months back when I ws job hunting I kept an eye on any IT instructors jobs going in the region, unfortunately none came up.

My father is an instructor with FAS for about the last 25 years. He's currently teaching ECDL, but there are more advanced I.T. courses in FAS as well, programming, networking etc.

Pay starts at about 37K last time I checked, but you could enter at a higher point on the scale.

Guranteed job, and a half day every Friday!

If I have any more ideas I'll post them.

FAS usually requires you do have X years of experience in your field (usually 3 years) before they'll take you on.
