I think I may have gotten a job subject to a medical and references however I dont want to give my last employer as a ref as they are not a very professional outfit and I highlighted some concerns to them about there organisation which they didnt appreciate also its a very small company so there is no HR so they wont have a clue about code of ethics or being professional.I was also only there 3/4 months

I have worked in 2 other places before that and for much longer and they are bigger companies with hr departments I would much prefer to give these as my refs.

Also is it more common to give past supervisors or a hr person as a reference I have heard that the only thing that it is asked is to confirm the dates that I would have worked there.I heard that this is the policy of the more bigger companies

This is what I would do:

Give them the references you want to give them (use the managers you got along well with, not one of the HR drones.) Don't explain why you haven't used your previous employer. If they specifically ask for your previous employer, tell them you would rather not use them as you weren't there for very long so they wouldn't really be able to give an accurate reflection of what you're like as an employee. If they keep pushing, well then they're dickheads.

What I was going to say was that my manager has left the company and there is noone else that could give me a ref as there is no HR

Also is it ok to give HR personal as refs?

    Yes you could say that.

    HR are fine for references.

Iv never really thought about this one....I normally just check the references that are listed...so if your not happy giving your last job as a reference then use someone else.

Id generally like to speak to supervisors...they can give you alot more than a HR person could.

a lot of employers dont like just getting HR references becuase usually HR references only consist of dates worked there and thats it, unless they have other information to hand. most employers want to speak to someone you worked with, preferably senior to you as they can give a reference regarding what your work was like.

when i used to recruit most companies wanted 2 references before they would let a candidate start, and they would have to be character references, not just the dates you worked there. they either wanted written character references or a verbal reference following a certain format i.e. scoring out of 10 on questiins like time keeping, ability to work, etc. and then the last question was always "would you hire this person again". if the answer to that was no then you were fcuked.
