What Lap Steel to get????

    Hey,

Hopefully i can get some advice on what's the best Lap Steel Guitar to get when starting out. There's a load of them available on Thomann - but i'm dubious about buying a guitar online without being able to play it first (and i've only found one shop in Dublin that has a lap steel for sale)

i've played the Fender FR 50 squareneck and wasnt that impressed with the sound of it - although i've heard that with a bit of adjustment they can sound much better.

I'm also aware that you can buy Nut Extensions to use on an ordinary old acoustic etc.

I think my preference would be to buy a lap steel guitar - so if anyone out there knows anything about the various lap steel brands or models (Fender, Gretsch, Tenayo Whiteborn etc etc etc) any advice or recommendations would be great!!

    thanks!

    Hi

The Fender is nice but has Strat pickups so has a pretty unique sound. I have a Gretsch Lap Steel which is great. They are prett cheap on Thomann and reasonably well built. I wouldn;t recommend the Harley Bentons they sell although trying before you buy is less of an issue wit a steel becasue there are no issues of feel or weight etc to deal with.

Hope that helps. Oh and be warned the Lap Steel isn't all that rewarding to play so you may find yourself wanting to get a Pedal Steel in future and thats just an exercise in frustration!

I got Chris at Industrialguitars.com to make me one a few months ago =, one of the nicest guys to deal with and a great instrument. Now if I could only get my head around those eight strings!
