I'm thinking of taking a year out starting around Sept and I'm pretty broke so thinking of au pairing for a bit to get me started, then maybe a bit of travel and some volunteering... Just wondering if anyone has done the au pairing thing, got any advice?
Or even advice on the year out, is it hard to go back to studying/college afterwards? Would you reccommend it?
    Thanks

Yeah i'd definitly recommend a year out. After a long period of traveling you feel a bit different but in a good way. You see things in a totally different light having experienced various cultures and environments.

I went traveling every summer during my 4 years of college and i fit back in without problems. Granted i was still living abroad when i went back to college as i went in the US. So it still felt like i was traveling a bit. You feel a bit of an anti-climax when you first get back and you itch to go away again. But that soon wears off.

You could always try a few months away in Central or South America or even South East Asia where the cost of living is really cheap. You can do a volunteer course so you aren't spending much money as they put you up and feed you. You can find a lot of free ones on the net. Just try save as much as you can between now and September or get a small loan.
