FAS 2008 Overseas Graduate Programme

Anyone have any experience of FAS Overseas Graduate Programme to China.

2 year placement required which seems a bit daunting. Money is €1000 a month, it wouldn't go far here, but maybe it'd be worth a good bit more in China. Long term though I would presume it'd be pretty beneficial.

I'm just finishing a masters in engineering this year, but have previously worked for almost 2 yrs after my primary civil degree, so I'm pushing on too!!

I'd put it at the back of my mind over the last few months, but rang them today, and my CV and application needs to be in by tomorrow if I want to be considered.

    Any worldly advice appreciated!

Friend of mine did the 2 year stint in Japan, based in software just outside of Tokyo as far as I can recall. He seemed to recommend it highly and is currently in a pretty good job in London (sometimes the employer on the programme though will offer you a full time contract after the programme). He learned good Japanese as well, not fluent, but enough to get by (suppose that was due to working with computers for the majority of the job).

Dont know too much about China to be honest. One slight warning I would offer you is to beware of the locations an engineering degree may lead to i.e. some of the industrial areas in outer provinces etc. Other than that, it appears to be a fantastic opportunity to do something completely different for a couple of years and learn some valuable skills that may stand to you and differentiate you hugely from other engineers when you return.

    Go for it.

I went through it in 2005. Was in China for 2 years, best time of my life. Considering that most people in the company only got around 500 a month you live fairly well on 1000. Be wary that inflation is up 21% now though in Beijing, stay away from that city until the Olympics are over. I'd recommend going over there, you'll get a lot more recognized experience than if you stayed here in Ireland. It advanced my career easily by about 5 years.
