Finally a functional Skype client for the iPhone.. what we've all been waiting for!

You can also twitter from this app and chat over ICQ, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo & AIM. Sounds like the ultimate IM / VOIP app.

    Video of it in action

Couple of negatives though.. doesn't look like it supports phone calls over EDGE (only Wi-Fi) and it ONLY supports Fring - Skype on PC (i.e you cannot call from Fring on your iPhone to someone else's iPhone running Fring).

Might change as it updates as it's only the first version.

    How to get it:

for a first attempt, this is really impressive! I tried out a few test calls via skype but the audio was very choppy. Still it's really handy to have all my IM accounts in one app. Hopefully they'll improve audio because I use skype quite a bit.

Yep, was very impressed with it myself.

Judging by the filename and video above, it's still in early stages ("pre-release").

Yeah, I was actually expecting this to be more of a proof of concept than an actual working release.

If Apple are going to succeed with the App Store, they're going to have do bend the rules a little to let apps like this in. Otherwise I can't see too many jailbreakers going legit.

Excellent , I was just thinking that it was about time someone developed this . Tried a few calls on windows messenger , cool .

Whats the odds of this making the app store?

Never! I never thought that it would reach it, in fact, I thought that was why it was so late being released. Because it had been out for the nokia n95 well before the n95.

Its been out 6 weeks and is next to useless for VOIP, unless you like having a 2 second lag in your conversations.

Very possibly and only works over wi-fi. However the point remains that it is in the App Store and also that it provides an IM client for many of the main services in one app. I've been delighted to have my Skype contacts and ICQ ones available to me at last.

how exactly are calls paid for if you use fring?
does the money come off your skype credit or is it added on to your phone bill?
wouldn't be too keen on using it if the calls are charged to your phone bill...

afaik isnt it VOIP, so its it uses data, which comes out of your data allowance with no charge, unless you go over, you need to ring another voip device as opposed to a number

and tbh it seems to be the way forward, in the US a lot of phone plans are becoming more data centred as opposed to the old minutes bundles as people are moving to voip, its the future i reckon

Depends what kind of a call you're making. Skype to Skype calls are, as ever free. Other calls are going to cost and will come out of your Skype credit. Nothing to do with your phone bill.

Well it does use your data. Which is on your phone bill.

Well, of course. I think that's a given. You can't do much on your phone on less you pay some sort of bill. I would imagine anyone intending using fring or skype or any other VoiP client would have the wit to ensure that they have a data bundle onboard.

Every time I try to make a SKP call through fring it keeps saying "skype call: login in.please try again in a moment."
    It then ends the call.
Does anyone know what the problem is?
