Well finally, 12 months after first handing in my papers, ive been issued my uniform (RDF). Ive a couple of questions however...

    1) My beret. Should I cut out the inner black silk lineing? What benifits come from cutting this out?

    2) Shaping the beret has proved troublesome! Ive trying the warm water thing, but the shape still doesnt look right. Any tips? Anyone have a picture of how a perfectly shaped beret should look?

    3) Boots, what polish do you use? Use a cloth to get a shine?

    Thanks :D

Do nothing with your kit until you're told how to wear it by your NCO, jumping the gun will only mark you as a heat-seeker.

If you're unsure of anything the first people you should be asking are your NCOs, not anonymous posters on a message board.

To further add to what Cushtac said..

Removing the liner from the baret is damaging government property!.. And while I've never seen anyone charged over something stupid I know that the RDF NCO's can be a bit anal with their rank/power.

As regards polish. Well RDF or PDF (doesn't matter) your not suppose to 'bull' boots anymore. So any kind of polish will do.

I'm a lazy sod and just use the rub on sqeezie stuff :D and buff them to a shine using a pair of ladies tights!.

I would prefer if you changed that to some RDF NCO's....don't tar us all with the same brush cos you've seen what some NCO's are like. Back to uniforms, tights are the business!!!! (to buff with, not to wear)

    nonsence!!!

    show some initiative!

cut the lining out, it makes for easier shaping, put it in scalding water, slap it on your head(dont burn yourself:rolleyes:) grab the side of the beret and pull it VERY VERY hard down your face to the bottom of your ear, when it dries it will contract and you'll be the envy of all the others :p

parade gloss gets a good shine up, oh and of course *cough*clear floor polish*cough* for the bulled part ;)

The beret...dampen it over a kettle,
fold it front to back (from ribbon to front) fold left to right and right to left.
It should look like a fajita with the cap badge showing put it under your mattress (dont do this if the base is chain link) you may need to wear it to pull the right shape into it then repeat above.
Boots.... they are not polished to a shine as mairt said the polish in the bottle is the correct way to go
Boots for the dress uniform should be 'bulled' for this use kiwi parade gloss and a lint free cloth 'chamoise'
Put a small bit of polish on the cloth apply to the boot with a small bit of spit work into the leather in small spiral motion, when the polish is worked in repeat and repeat and repeat. Cover the whole of the visible boot not just the toe and heal to shine use a pair of tights wrapped into a ball do not use floor polish as other people have advised when it crackes and starts to come off you'll be the platoon's sgt's new heat seeker.
Lining of the beret...the beret is not yours it belong's to the goverment your just haveing a lend of it for the duration of service.
Any further question ask your section commander all section commanders take pride in how there troops look/perform. It reflect's on them.
    Good luck with your training:)

one more comment learn the trade the way it should be learn't when you become qualified then adapt it make the job easier
