just wondering the firearm capabilities of the gardai? is it just ddu's who carry firearms all the time and if so are the handguns? have they access to machine guns and how is it governed and also do detectives bring weapons home i.e. 24-7 armed?

    :D

No, wouldnt mind a change of career though.
According to the Garda website "There are approximately 1,700 Detective Gardai around the country who carry firearms and always work in plain clothes."

No mention of the ARU/ERU etc.. The Guards should really get the finger out with that website.. its Dire.

There is no way anyone should be posting whether Gardai bring weapons home, how they are stored and issued on a daily basis etc.

If any operational Gardai come on here and give out that info they can officially be classified as braindead.

The type of weapons used are not exactly a secret but how they are issued and who carries is not for public consumption.

I am not a member of the Gardai but common sense surely dictates this

Agreed. PSNI is needed around here for a reason - it's also a good way to keep the good man occupied when on rest days!

All ill say is it depends on the area! I know of some whole counties that wouldnt have armed cover over nights. And i also know of towns of about 10000 + people that only have armed cover for about 5 hours a day! whatever way you look upon that, its not good! And yes, they do have access to machine guns, Gda Jerry McCabe had one when he was shot(though i think it wasnt in his hand)
