Am I the only person in Ireland who thinks this bloke is enormously over rated and not funny at all? Every morning in the car I have to endure him (she drives, so she picks) doing terribole impressions of such cutting edge figures as Daniel O'Donnell, Ronan Keating (the very idea of Ronan Keating talking is for some reason meant to be high-larious) and at least one other non-entity whose names escapes me for the minute. I dont think doing impressions in unfunny per se; its juust that theres areally only cause to pretend to be Daniel O'donnell in specific situations, I cannot for the life of me see why we are mneant to be entertained by someone pretending to be him reading out questions on a breakfast radio show

Am I the only one that thinks you dislike everything in life and that there will be a thread on each and every topic?

Well I don't listen to the radio so I just couldn't tell you. If it really bothers you so much, why don't yout turn the radio off or better yet, switch to another station. Make a plea for your sanity.

Agree 100% How he is still tolerated is beyond me. I also find his fans very cliquey. Any time I have mentioned that I think Gift Grub is crap, people get very defensive about him and assault me with "Why do you think hes not funny? Whats wrong with your sense of humour? Obviously you haven't heard THIS impression!"

Agreed.. Ian Dempsey's entire show is over-rated!

Possibly, but I have so much goodwill towards him from the Dempsey's Den days, I find it very hard to get annoyed at him

I agree with the OP. He is not funny.

Dempsey is a complete clown. The most annoying of a bad bunch on in the morning.

    I think he's pretty funny.

That said, I rarely listen to the station, so don't encounter his stuff that much.

The problem with Gift Grub is the very nature of the show. It goes out on a daily basis.

On quiet days it's going to be hard to come up with anything remotely funny. On days that are busy, it's easy enough to at least have some fun through the use of farcical parody, even if the actual dialogue itself is not that funny people can relate to the event and see the humour in it.

There are some very good pieces on the end of year - Gift Grub CD. I've always liked those.

thats a good point. Its probably the familliarity that makes it irritating. If it was more of an occasional thing the novelty would probably help it along. funny Today FM's producers havent deduced that

    I'm a fan, but....

I preferred the days when they did 4 minute sketches (not adlibbing to a loose script in the studio). Some of the funniest stuff is in the pre-canned sketches - Radio Roy/Jay, Bosco, Michael D wound up by Jay in the airport etc.

I find the songs for the most part pretty unfunny too (that one last week with Bertie, Clinton, Blair and Mandela was awful).

Get back to the scripted sketches.

I have to agree with the OP. I ind him about as funny as puppy cancer.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Well if you don't like listening to him OP then there are plenty of other radio stations..... yeesh?

    Every morning in the car
I would have thought that going to work (or the dole office?) by private car would have been a bit too 'snobby' for you.

Get the bus, listen to some other public transport users' conversations.
You won't have to listen to Gift Grub & can delight in the fact that you are on a non-snobby form of transport & - Wey hey! All your life's problems are solved!

Moved from After Hours (thank Christ; apologies Monkeyfudge and tSubh Dearg, but... y'know...)

Have to say I think he's very talented. Gift Grub makes me lol on a regular basis.

My best mate is this guy's cousin and I know his father very well. The difference between his father and him are unreal. I found Mario a stuck up prik when I met him but maybe I got the wrong impression. Did you all know he starred in Glenroe as a doctor before starting comedy? I find some of his stuff quite funny but some isn't. His second gift grub with the 02 world cup was pretty funny.

Maybe you just don't understand humour. Mario's or mine.

Maybe. But frankly you seem more funny than him from what I can gather so far, and that isnt saying much for Mario...

Oh dear. There may be a reason why you don't find this man funny, but it appears to have little to do with him...

I'm "Mr I love football, I love hurling",
I'm "Mr Was it punts or was it sterling?"

Mario deserves a free ride for the rest of his life for those two lines alone.
Problem is, he's carrying that show, and he knows it.

Have to agree with the OP. I posted a while back on the best breakfast show thread saying I hated the Ronan and Daniel personations, I don't see the point. A lot of the Gift Grub sketches are very weak too imo. I don't listen any more, partially because of Mario, but mainly because I just couldn't listen to Ian any more.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

I agree that the Daniel impersonation is weak. But the Ronan one is very funny - the way Mr Keating is depicted as being all wannabe "rebel"... Very funny stuff.
