Alright, so has anyone spotted anything hidden? Short Cuts? Hidden prizes?

I only got to play it for an hour myself and i couldn't get the turbo start going. Is it 3.2.1.GO (On GO hit the accelerator)?

Hit the accelerator just a little bit after 2 will do it.

FAQ for Mario Kart, including short cuts (most involve using mushrooms/star to cut corners without losing speed, but there are some good genuine shortcuts that you may not know about)

if u tip the wheel towards you as u go over a jump, it'll do a trick that'll give u a speed boost as u land. This also works by twirlin the wheel left or right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,570 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I just give the wheel a shake, does the job.

Also if you tail someone for a few seconds, you'll get a boost from their slip stream (blue speed lines will appear after 1 second, and then you'll get a boost a couple of seconds later)

aahhh. i noticed sometimes as i'm going down a hill players go tearing past me but not boosting, they have a kind of wind around them. is this the slip stream?

nice. will have to try this out myself then. one other thing i noticed is that if someone is just ahead of you and you throw a green sheel sometimes it goes over their head. makes it much harder to get people. on double dash as soon as they passed you out you could clobber them with the green sheel.

The different directions on the d-pad does different things.

Up = throw throwable items some distance in front of you (you can get someone in front you now with banana skins and fake item box)
Left + Right = item activate
Down = throw throwable items (like shells) behind you

Just had a look at the manual, it actually tells you all these things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,570 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Trailing items behind you (bananas, red shells, green shells) protects you against green/red shells up the ass.

i.e. does what it usually does by default, so shoots a green sheel in front of you, drops a banana behind you or sends another freaking blue shell to the player in first place

aaahhh blue shell. greatest weapon ever.... well i think the bullet that auto pilots is class as well.

only if you spend your races at the back of the field!
POW has to be the most annoying addition ever, followed closely by the lightning cloud over your head

Bikes seem to be faster than karts (in time trials at least) but are awkward to steer. Wheelie on every straight, power slide on every corner and do as many tricks as humanly possible when in the air to boost your speed.

are people playing with the wheel or the old skool controls? i have been using the wheel and its much better than i thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Wasn't sure about it before, but have been only using the wheel to control it!!! Love it too!
Noticed that when my bro was using the automatic powerslide controls, that it didn't seem to do anything, and I was flying past him with the manual powerslides! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,570 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yeah power sliding is addictive. Very easy with the wheel too (even though some people say its not).

I notice that power sliding is not used alot online though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

is this cause people dont know how to do it? i only got to play 1 or 2 games on-line but i did notice very few people using it.

I just unlocked Rosalina,it said "this is a gift from Super Mario Galaxy." Had no idea how it happened so I just looked it up. If you have a save game file of Super Mario Galaxy on your console and you win a grand prix (i think its any grand prix) it unlocks her character. Not a bad character either, she is a heavyweight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,570 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yeah I got Rosalina last night too... good character.

I think I have everyone unlocked now.

Birdo was the last one I got.. awesome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

Drifting is awsome on the level with the water (Koopa something?). Why do people pick the heavyweights cos they are so slow? Also a tip, when you are in first place try and keep a green or red shell or a banana on you so when a red shell comes your way it will just hit off it and won't affect you. Unfortunetly this won't work for blue shells. I forgot to mention that fake boxes won't work for this.

Has to be a particular one, I only did my first Grand Prix last night, I did the 4 retro cups in 50cc, and unlocked
    Diddy Kong (medium weight)
Yeah I know it's only 50cc, but I like to start there and work my way through them all :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

i did some 50cc grand prix as well and i didnt unlock Rosalina either. so it must be when you finish a certain grand prix on a certain CC that you get her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,570 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I got Rosalina when I finished 50cc for the first time - I had 6 gold cups and 2 silver.

Must be something like that, like in Wii Sports, when you crossed the Pro line, you got a fancy bowling ball etc...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37 spicywedge

id love to know what this pro line is because when you are playing online the pit you against people of a similar rating so it would be nice to know when to try harder and that if your about to lose this rating. i remember that from wii sports but i could never get pro in base ball impossible!!

No it's just to do with the number of races you've been in online, I think you get it after 10 or something. I have one, and I've never won an online race, that and my score is only around the 4500 mark so it's definitely not score based.

well that seems fair enough then i can rest easy that my lovely gold steering wheel is goin nowhere. see you online

that's insane. How is he jumping over the gaps at 0:37? Is he using mushrooms?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Linku

The gold wheel is purely to do with how many races you've won online or offline with the wheel. Use a different controller and it'll revert back to white.

Possibly a mushroom for the first and an in-air trick while above the first jump to get the boost for the second?

It's just about how many races you have used it for I earned mine during a horrible session where I was doing terrible so couldn't be how many you've won, I don't think.

It looks like tricks are being done on the set of ramps previous, allowing a big enough boost to get over the gap.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37 spicywedge

he is snaking, using the boost from the drift to send him over the gap. tried it last night and it works a charm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Don't think it quite counts as snaking, it's just very well done drifting.
The snaking was on MKDS, and involved very rapid left right movements, constantly, so that you were constantly drifting even when going up a long straight.

They're playing as Rosalina.... (an unlockable character in single player if you have a Mario Galaxy save file on your Wii).

it's not beside your name, it's beside the kart when you're driving.

I assume that if I download a save game file for SMG from GameFAQ's or elsewhere (not having the game), this will allow Rosalina to be unlocked... yes???

Ok here is an actual short cut for doing a time trial on the luigi circuit. on the last corner with the boosts, instead of actually taking this cut the corner and go into the sand, once in here use your mushroom to boost through it and dodge those pipes if done correctly for 3 laps you will come in at the very least under 1:20 !!!
