Ok, with the release of SQL Server 2008 in Feb, there will be soon SQL Server 2008 certifications.

So.. heres is how they are expected to work.

There are at the moment, 2 MCTS certifications in SQL Server 2005 which are
This will change with the new MCTS for SQL Server 2008. What will happen is the MCTS for SQL 2005 will be split into 2 separate certifications. These will be
    • MCTS: SQL Server Database Admin (70-432)
    • MCTS: Database Developer (70-433)

The reasoning for this, was that the original 70-431 exam has elements of both the Database Admin and Database Developer and it was argued that either side of that track only learnt the other part for the sake of the exam. So it has been split.

As the 70-431 exam was the pre requisite for the DBA and DBD certs on 2005 the new exams will become the prerequisite for their MCITP counterpart on 2008.

There is no upgrade from MCTS: SQL 2005 to either of the MCTS SQL 2008 certs. In other words there is no way to do a one exam track to get the 2 new SQL 2008 certs.

There are currently three Pro (MCITP) certifications on SQL Server 2005 which are
These will not change in SQL Server 2008. There will be a few changes in the exam format and number of exams for the Pro certifications. You will now need the prerequisite MCTS for the MCITP.

In the past you need 1 exam for the MCTS and 2 exams to achieve the Pro certification. This has been changed to 1 exam MCTS and 1 exam Pro, so a total of 2 exams for MCITP on SQL 2008.

There will be a 1 exam upgrade path for those who already MCITP on SQL 2005 to the relevant certification on SQL 2008. The 1 exam will give you both the MCTS and MCITP certification.

There will no upgrade from MCDBA SQL 2000 to MCITP SQL 2008. You will need to upgrade from MCDBA to MCITP: DBA 2005 and then to MCITP: DBA 2008. This will be a 3 exam upgrade path as you need to do the following exams
