Short term summer contract and time off

I've accepted a temp job with the civil service again this summer and opted for the 3 month contract (including one week holiday). A week after I start my brother is getting married abroad and I have to go (something along the lines of my mother disowning me if I don't when I brought it up...) and the flights are only once a week so I would have to take the whole week of my second week off.

The department I worked for last year were fine with you taking the 5 days together but I know when I applied this year there was something in the screening about being unavailable for a week or more. Do you think I should tell them now and give them a heads up (and risk them telling me I can't have it so I have to give up the job) or just arrive in June and then act surprised when my brother announces a shotgun wedding the week after?!

I think it's taking the p1ss a bit but my family are being really ar$ey about the prospect of me not going and I can't afford not to work for the Summer.

I would tell them myself. Make sure you tell them that this will be the only holidays you take for the summer and that its unavoidable as its a wedding.

Tell them, IME dumping it on them at the last moment always ends badly.

PS: I thought civil service temps get 1/7th time worked in time off? I know I do in the HSE.

I had 4 days on a 10 week contract last year, 5 days on a 13 week contract this time around. :(

Are you on a contract with an agency or direct with the Civil Service?

Direct with the civil service both times. It wasn't just me, everyone had the same contract

I'll ask my sis (human resources in the civil service) and see what she says, but as far as I know temp contract workers should get the same pay/hours/holidays on a pro-rata basis. Only agency workers are immune because their contract is with an agency.
